The site I'm working on cuts the right side off the page when you print. Is
there an easy way to create a printer friendly button that automatically
removes the nav bar on the left so the content of the page will print
correctly? I see this on a lot of different sites but I fear that you have
to create the pages manually. Does anybody know? Maybe something from
Coolmaps?

Thanks,

Ryan

As long as I provide the ability to print just the layout with the correct
size for printing on 8.5 x 11 than I'll be alright. I've tried to explain
to people that the website is designed to be viewed on a monitor which is
roughly 1.5 to 2 times the width of a piece of paper and it wouldn't be a
good idea to compromise the content of your site in an effort to make it
printer friendly. So with that in mind I've been looking for an "easy" way
of adding the printer friendly button to each page. I guess the search
continues. Is there a place to request new features? Maybe if we can get
enough people to request this it may happen faster. Just a thought.

I've done this by 1) making the page wrap to browser width, and 2)
providing a JavaScript function to redisplay the page in a second
browser window and delete the header and left navigation portions of the
page (using style tags). It actually works quite well as long as you
don't have a lot of graphics on the page that cause the layout to be
chopped off. If your layout would accomodate this technique, let me
know and I'll post the directions.

Hi Ryan,

Good suggestion for a component but unfortunately you will either have to
design your pages to be under 610 pix in width or create a separate printer
friendly page that mirrors each of your existing pages that is that
narrow... There is no way to control a users settings on their personal
equipment from a web page... and if you make a print button that calls the
printer friendly page there is no stopping the user from just clicking file

page anyway... BitMotion has a module in their Universal Component System
that disables the print function of the browser... I am not sure that you
can use that on the layout area of a page and have a print graphic that
calls a 2nd printer friendly page and sends content of it... I'd have to
ask Blake that one...

I use a PHP script called PrintIt by someone called vsbabu. I put the text I
want to print in a table and add "start script here" and "end script here"
and it creates a separate printer friendly page on the fly. Works well! It
appears that the guy's site is missing (www.vsbabu.org), but I do have the
script if you want it.

Natuarlly I trying to find a way to do this without having to do anything
more than add a button to the Master boarder.

This site has plenty of graphics so that will probably cause me some
problems. I welcome any other suggestions.

Thanks,

Ryan

Just file link to it, but if they have a pdf veiwer it will just open the documnet either in
there browser, or the viewer. So unless you zip it up it would be wise to target a new window.

What would be involved in having the button take the viewer to a PDF version
of the page for downloading?
