Hi, Folks,

1) This morning I took the plunge and purchased and downloaded NetObjects
Fusion MX (Version 6). It's a 52.6 MB download so, if you decide to
purchase the upgrade, have it shipped to you unless you have a broadband
connection.

I decided to plunge right in and learn the good, the bad, and the ugly
about NOF MX. I am not a regular NOF user and I don't have many sites
created with NOF, so my "guinea pig" was the unofficial Learning NOF
site. I've only been using NOF MX for a few hours but, so far, I have
nothing bad or ugly to report. The installation went smoothly, and the
conversion of the Learning NOF site was relatively painless. I used two
third party components in the development of the site -- the Page Position
component from BitMotion Software and Kai Tödter's free HTML Site Map
component. I had to copy both components from the NOF5 directory and
reinstall them, but they both seem to work with NOF MX. I re-published the
site, and everything seems to be working. Please let me know if you see
any problems. The URL is:

http://pittsites.com/nof/

As time permits, I'll create a new site using NOF MX and keep you posted on
my experiences with the new program. If any of you have upgraded to NOF
MX, please let me know what you think.
----------

2) A recurring question I see on Web development forums regards methods of
enabling clients to update their own sites. I'm currently evaluating a
Web-based program that looks pretty good. For more information, go to the
"Learning NetObjects Fusion" site at:

http://pittsites.com/nof/

and click on the "FAQ" button.

Regards,

Bill

1. Glad to hear that you haven't experienced any problems with it so far.
2. I hope that its mentioned on the web site what the size of the download would
be. I thought 10 to 15 Mb downloads were huge. I certainly WILL NOT download
this since I don't have a broad band connection (ie read that as cable or DSL
connection).

One thing I would like to know is have they made it possible to have two NO
sites open at one time so that one can cut and paste between the two?

Hi, Robert,

I am not yet familiar with NOF MX, but I don't think it allows you to open
more than one site at a time. If you have sufficient resources, you could
run two instances of NOF.

Bill

I have opened two NO 5.0's many times and cut and pasted between the two
with no problems...doesn't mean it won't happen sometime but so far no
problem having two open just to cut and paste.

Nice to hear a short review - I can't wait to hear more about NOF 6!

From the web writeup, I was very gald to hear that:
1.) they have now integrated the recovery and NOD stability testing with
every opening, buliding on NOF 5 to make NOD's more sustainable which is
essential. Very good!
2.) that you can import NOF generated html, at least, which is a step to
being able to import html generated with other programs like Dreamweaver,
GoLive, and Frontpage which is very important.

I was disappointed that:
1.) It seems very targeted at the "home" user rather than the "web
designer". I really hope that it doesn't become the next Frontpage.
2.) No mention of greater access to html
3.) No mention of relative width control, which I think is really important.
NOF is the very best WYSIWYG editor, but the zero-margins text-box approach
just doesn't cut it when you need some relative-width elements. I know
there must be a way to at least allow masterborders with a relative width
layout....

The online services integration is OK, and I'm always happy to hear that
components will be even more integrated so they can be more powerful. I
just hope that this doesn't "close up" NOF rather than "opening up" options.

I still have NOF 4 I never went to 5 with all the problems I saw here.
Does anyone know if my NOF 4 sites can be used in the NOF6? Or will I
still need to export all of them to transform them to 6?

Go to site view, export as a template!

Then open Nof 6 and start a new site based on a template

Select the template you exported above

Make sure the style you used in Nof 4 gets copied to Nof 6 before

Make sure, if you used components in 4, that these components are available
in 6

Hi Robert, Bill, Kim and all -
While it IS possible to have two concurrent sessions of Fusion MX (or any
version) open and copy/paste content between the sessions, NetObjects strongly
discourages against this behavior. Reasons being that this can lead to a low
resource situation where crashing and instable site files can result.
Instead, if copy/paste is necessary, would recommend copy/paste to
Notepad/Word/etc with one site/one instance of Fusion MX open. Then open the
second site and copy/paste from Notepad to the site.

Hi Charles
You will be able to migrate your Fusion 4.0 sites directly to Fusion MX.
What we recommend is to first verify all file assets in the Fusion 4.0 site and
then to export the site as a template.
Then do a File > Open on the template file in Fusion MX and save a copy of the
site in MX.

Since you brought that up, does one still have to copy and paste to notepad
with MX so it doesn't throw unknown characters into the text? Ā seems to be
the favorite one and it tosses bunches of them into NOF unless pasted into
notepad first (why?).

Second...have a lot of things to copy and paste? I picked up a copy of
Clipmate last night...it is like haveing notepad on speed! 10 different cut
n pastes are possible, adding several cut n pastes together for one file and
many other features...nifty little program.

I've always had greater than 256 Megs of RAM, and now 512, and I run NT.
With that said, there have been many times that I've had to copy and paste
text as well as tables between two instances of Fusion. So maybe the answer
is just to 1.) have plenty of Ram available, and 2.) have a non 9x OS, like
either NT or 2000.

Hi Kim
Yes we still recommend pasting to Notepad first to strip out those characters.
When text is pasted into Fusion, we do not have any restrictions on the
allowable content so we will paste all characters.
Notepad only accepts ascii text. So when you copy/paste into Notepad, it will
automatically convert these chracters into symbols.
Saving the text in Word as RTF and then copy/paste seems to work well when
pasting directly into Fusion.

Thanks for the tip on Clipmate. I will keep it logged for future reference.

The ClipMate clipboard extender is not freeware. I believe registration is
$20.00US. For a good freeware clipboard extender, check out Yankee Clipper

Clipmate isn't freeware but it is definitely worth the small cost. We've
been using it for about 3 years and couldn't get by without it, especially
when doing programming or working with Fusion.

Help. I need a web designer to help me build a net object wesite. It is an
interactive timeshare blue book. The guest inputs from a drop box the resort ,
unit size, and week number hits submit and receives back the calculated value of
the unit. His entered data is stored in a database for further contact.
