Hi everyone,

I have now been using NNW for about a week and the thing is that i
cant figure out how to delete a feed item. Please note that it is
different from deleting a feed. I have asked a friend too about it who
is a regular user of NNW and he too doesnt know how to do this.

There is an option as News > Read Items > Delete which is always
inactive and obviously the shortcut listed as ctrl+Command+K for
deleting items also does not work.

I cant believe that just pressing the "delete" button doesnt delete
the feed item as in Mail RSS Reader or Vienna. Just for this one small
glitch, i have to yet made NetNewsWire my default RSS reader.

Is this feature actually missing?

RSS is not like email, you can't delete an article from the feed,
simply make it read. Only the publisher/blogger can delete individual
articles, and if they do that, then it would be gone the next time you
refresh your feed subscriptions. Of course they are not likely to
delete an article as they want more people than just you to read their
posts and articles.

Items disappear on their own -- there's no need to manually delete anything.

I know that some still want to delete news items sometimes anyway, and it's a feature being considered for the future.

Please Please Please include that feature. So i assume News > Read
Items > Delete is a placeholder for just that and does not function at
all currently.

Not exactly. When you have a folder selected, you can delete read items from that folder. (It's a feature I myself use pretty often.) But it doesn't delete items from the feed.

PS In a technical sense, there's no such thing as deleting: the app will still have to retain the news item, so that the app knows, when that news item comes in again, that it was deleted.

One way to not see news items you've read is to choose News > Read Items > Hide.

Obscurity?

So why do other readers like Vienna and Apple's Mail allow users to do
that?

Of course i know i cant delete a news item from the feed source.

But as you will know if you check out the apps mentioned above, a user
can surely delete a news item if he wants to from his reader.

When a feed is parsed and its contents downloaded on your reader,
there is no reason to NOT allow them to delete individual items at
their will.

Even if you cared to check what News > Read Items > Delete is meant to
do, you would not have replied like you just did.

1 star for replying without understanding the problem.

Brent's reply is far more accurate and as you can see from his post,
that feature is yet to be included and its not something that cant be
done as you understand it.

Everything Ian said is correct -- he was trying to be helpful. I have seven years of explaining this issue, and a bit more practice, but I appreciate Ian's help.

If anyone wants to be critical on this list, be critical of me and NetNewsWire, but not of other people on the list. Thanks!

I am glad Brent appreciates me trying to help people, obviously I
never claimed to be an expert, and I am not involved in NNW
development. I will be sure next time to not reply to you even I am
certain of the correct answer. One thing I have done is to buy
licences for NetNewsWire, even though it is free, because I want to
support further development. Have you got any NetNewsWire licences, or
just the free version?

Ahh.. Now i see how to use News > Read Items > Delete ... This will do
for now.

Hiding each read item does not go too well because there are some read
items after i have finished reading from all sources which i want to
tweet or blog about. So for that, i need to have them visible.

Ok, Brent. I understand you.

But i felt his explanation to be out of the way from what i asked.
It was technically correct but out of context.

Sorry, mate. Dont spoil your mood because of me.

I will purchase it if this simple delete feature i talked about is
included.

I appreciate your purchase and hope that it will help the development
team to develop the feature i badly want.

Apple Mail will do till then. :)

If you want to go back to certain posts after the fact and follow up, I would recommend trying "Flag Item".  This will allow you to easily find them in the 'flagged items' folder (should be at the top of the feeds column).   After you have followed up with the post, you can unflag it and it will be removed from that folder.
