Dear all,

has anyone tried to run NetLogo with the new Apple hardware configuration? I know that there might be compatibility issues. And, I can't find much information anywhere on this. Did anyone encounter any problem? Any info is highly appreciated.

Thank you very much!

Kind Regards,
Vittorio

Why would you expect compatibility issues?

Is there a new OS particular to the M1 chips, or can they run on the same Mac OS as other hardware. That seems to be more important.

Dear Michael,

thank you for your reply. I am not sure about the nature of the problem. The operating system is Big Sur, so that shouldn't be the problem. But, I found that the M1 chip seems to cause problems for some software:

Also, I found this for NetLogo specifically:

Thank you for your time!

To the reddit thread I see the response:

"What error do you get? You may be having an issue with Big Sur’s new notarization requirements."

and in your first post I see:

"Software developed for Intel won’t run on the new chips"

Netlogo isn't developed for Intel. It is developed on Java, so a JVM, which abstracts away the underlying hardware architecture.

Problems like this can be headaches. But they could also be misunderstandings on the part of users who think everything should be plug and play, without troubleshooting a little on their own. In order to know, you have to try it out and provide detailed explanations of the outcomes. The reddit thread doesn't provide much detail, you may have to be a trailblazer here.

I am running NL6.2.0 on the new M1 iMac on MacOS 11.4 Big Sur and it works great. The first time I opened it, the system needed to download Rosetta which only took a few seconds, then it ran fine. It is snappy fast. The only slight problem is that the color used in the interface in my case is purple and so some things in NL are hard to read.

Thank you @Michael for looking into this and the advice! And, thank you @Jim for sharing your positive experience!
I am happy to hear things run smoothly also with the new configuration!

I believe this little thread will be useful to others as well :)
