We have been discussing a late summer/fall cruise for next year to Bermuda, probably on the Gem, (Breakaways too expensive for Bermuda IMO) but thats smack in the middle of hurricane season. Has anyone experienced a hurricane while taking a Bermuda cruise? What was their detour, or was it cancelled?

Last September I was sailing from Boston-Bermuda when Hurricane/TS Leslie was heading towards Bermuda. We were kept a minimum of 400 nautical miles from the hurricane at all times and were able to still call upon Bermuda although a day late.

The story that stands out to me was when an engaged couple was en route to Bermuda to get married, a storm diverted that ship to Canada. The entire wedding party was waiting in Bermuda while the bride and groom were in Canada (with no cool weather clothes).

A quick search of the web indicates that Bermuda has been affected by 38 cyclonic storms over the last 65 years. Divide that by the 21 week hurricane season and odds are very small that one particular cruise will be affected.

Yes - our cruise was at the end of September. Hurricane was supposed to hit Bermuda so we were not able to go to Bermuda. We went to Florida (Port Canav.) for 1 day and then to Nassau for 1 Day and were out at sea the other days. All in all, it was fine, but neither of those stops are like spending 3 days in Bermuda as planned.

We've taken 2 Bermuda cruises on smaller NCL ships, docking in downtown Hamilton then, and ran into a little bit of tossing around in rough seas (older ones had no stabilizers) during the crossings (in Sept/Oct) but no diversion or cancellation. HQ and ship captain has the latest marine forecast & navigational aid to steer around pending storms and will deviate from "normal" course by picking different headings to reach the ports as safely as possible. Ships like the Gem are built tough and has the speed as we're on her a week after Hurricane Sandy - doing 24+ knots racing down the coastline.

Aside from the pool area and the promenade being closed for safety reasons, everything else on the ship were running business as usual. Some of the best last minute bargain prices can be found for those dates - go for it. Besides, the transport system in Bermuda seemed to get overwhelmed with the Breakaway and the mega RCI ships in town - we're there on the EOS and the Dawn, and the pink buses were simply packed full & the fast ferries had to launch their biggest ship to handle the crowds & add extra runs to/from Dockyard.

I sailed the NCL Dream September of 1996 with my daughter. Day we left was beautiful, seas were as calm as could be...but we were told that we were going to hit rough seas by that night. We were right in the eye of the hurricane by morning. All activities were cancelled...could not go up to the top lounge closed for safety reasons...had to stay put in our cabins... clothing racks, went right through the glass windows, wine bottles flying all over...back dining rooms closed due to floor to ceiling windows... when eating in the alternate dining rooms, you had to hold on to the edge of your table, if not, your chair would tip over...we were 2 days late getting into Bermuda...at that point half the guests checked off the ship and flew home. It was something that i would not want to experience again. Actually the Captain of the ship should have deverted us to somewhere else. It was not a nice experience, and hope that i dont ever experience something like this again.

I was on the NCL Breakaway on September 8 this year when Tropical Storm Gabrielle hit Bermuda. The captain headed west to divert away from the storm and we ended up arriving in Bermuda about 13 hours behind schedule. The seas were quite calm during the entire journey. We did experience a little bit of rain and wind the next morning, but nothing that got in the way of our plans!

I was on the Dawn in Bermuda last month when TS Gabrielle prevented us from leaving the dock Tuesday as scheduled as the winds were too high for us to get out the channel so we stayed docked overnight, the water was going sideways soaking the dock.

In 2012, we were on the Explorer of the Seas that left NYC two hours before the port was closed and sailed through Hurricane Sandy. It was rocky, but wasn't as bad as one would think (except for one hour), but that would require a long explanation. In short, the wind was at our back and much of the sailing through the storm was during sleeping hours.

We were on this cruise too. Other than having to be tendered in the Dockyard due to being late in Bermuda, it was a great cruise. It was weird to leave Boston and not know for sure where we were going, though!

We were on this cruise too. We enjoyed staying an extra night in Bermuda and getting to watch the strength of the sea while safely tied up at the dock. Remarkably, it was also one of the smoothest cruises I have been on.

Caribbean Princess Oct 2012 - Princess didn't cancel the cruise and instead sailed the ship out of NY like a bat out of hell and went straight to Boston where it docked for a week while waiting out Hurricane Sandy. The Gem returning from its 9 day Caribbean was not so fortunate and got stuck out to sea rocking an rolling. They were safe but had a very rough time at sea. Ships could not divert to other northern ports like Halifax because they were closed for the season.

Norwegian Breakaway September 2013 as mentioned above, the captain did a great job avoiding Tropical Storm Gabrielle. It was smooth sailing and we arrived in the evening 12 hours late. Still had a great time on board and with the two days in Bermuda.

Is the Gem going to Bermuda next year? Two years ago on September 11, I was Bermuda-bound on the Gem but itinerary was changed to Florida/Bahamas due to a storm. Still a great cruise (and great weather) but we missed Bermuda!

Due to an earlier fire near Barrington and Wilshire, Line 720 will detour along Santa Monica Blvd between Barrington Ave and Bundy Dr. The detour is expected to last until approximately 6 p.m. or until the affected segment of Wilshire Blvd is reopened. Here are the details of the detour route:

Constant fire fighter activity, police activities, President Obama visiting LA, the Democratic National Convention, movie filming, the LA Auto Show, Anime Expo, any other large attendee conventions at the LA Convention Center, the Academy Awards, the Golden Globe Awards, musical concerts, the 2024 Los Angeles Olympics (crosses fingers), CicLAvia events, Michael Jackson and other celebrity funerals, paparazzis, police car chases, the Christopher Donner manhunt, Occupy LA protests, Rose Parade, LA Marathon, Dodgers winning the World Series (crosses fingers), LA Kings winning the Stanley Cup, LA Lakers winning the NBA championship parades, UCLA vs USC rivalry games, the Space Shuttle coming to town, and further more interesting things happening in LA almost every day for years to come.

The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority will begin work to replace nearly century-old valves and pipelines at River Road in Weston, from Loring Road to River Road, which will require traffic to be detoured around the work area.

In anticipation of this work, the contractor will begin paving at River Road on Thursday, September 20. The detour is scheduled to begin on October 1 and is expected to remain in place through February, 2013.
