I see that the Murkowski/Torricelli bill regarding email spam has been
passed by the Senate, after being attached to a bill that would outlaw
long-distance telco "slamming" (see
http://allpolitics.com/1998/05/13/ap/phone.slamming/).

I sorta figured it would get passed. I mean, let's think on things a
minute, here.

What's the most dangerous thing for a politician? Informed, well-educated
masses. What's the first thing the masses turn to these days when they need
information on something, fast? The net, of course.

Ergo, the net is the most dangerous thing possible for politicians. It MUST
be destroyed, at any cost (preferably, at great cost, so the unwashed masses
can be separated from more of their money, so they'll have to work longer
and harder, so they won't be able to pay attention to what the politicians
are doing).

What's the quickest, most efficient way to disable the net? Give it to the
spammers, so it becomes useless. For best results, do this with lots of
handwaving about how you're *desperately trying* to save the net and the
CHILLLDRUUUUNN.

At least, that's the same viewpoint I posed to my S.O. about 6 or 7 months
ago, and he couldn't really poke any holes in it, other than to say that it
sounded completely out-there... :)

Hmmm. Well, perhaps... there's a rumor going around that Clinton needs two
assistants, several advisors, a map, a flashlight, both hands, and a compass
to figure out what to do with his willy during his nightly conquests, but
then, that's what assistants and advisors are for. :)
