I still have a Netcom account, and Netcom is propbally on par with
IBM right now by virtue of the fact that IBM is haveing severe E mail
problems and news problems as well. But in terms of Bandwith and
connection, Netcom is poor, I remote download at less than 1K often, and
also connceting at over 24Kbs is a minor miricle(some POPs do conncet at
26Kbs). Aslo Netcom has problems with lost packets busy signals and
drops off the service. IBMnet has none of that.
Netcoms e mail is fair, but has been know to go on the fritz every so
often, but I guess compared to IBM its great for now, and newsfeed for
Netcom is excellent. Really USENET is Netcoms only saveing grace right
now. Also Be aware that Netcom plans to drop ita $19.95 a month
unlimited access priceing. If you really want to jump ship from IBM, I
would suggest a Baby Bell ISP. at&t or Sprint internet passport. But
hopefully E mail will be woring very smoothly soon.
>Thinking of joining Netcom. Does anyone have comments? Thanks in advance.
Yes, if you enjoy busy signals, help desks that don't give you help,
accounting departments that overcharge you, answer your inquiries only with
form letters, and then have to go to war with your credit card company to
get such charges removed, then Netcom is indeed the the perfect ISP that
will fulfill your every need.
Otherwise, forget them.

Once again, a case of YMMV....I tried IBM....I tried their auto sign up
using the 800 number, at least 6 times, at diff. times of day and on
diff days....Not once could i get through, so if they couldnt even let
me on to get my payment info, how could I be sure they would let me on
after I paid? I dont want to go through the hassle of seeking out
dozens of new ISP's and sending my cc info to each one, then
cancelling....Netcom doesnt do me wrong now, so I'll hang with them.
Only recently [in the last 2 weeks] have I started getting busy signals,
sometimes just one, then redial, and I'm in, and once i redialed for 10
minutes before getting on. Mail is delivered to me pretty quickly, and
the newsserver seems to have what I'm looking for, so I'm going to stick
with them for now.
And to the previous poster [not you, but the msg to which I did not
respond]: I havent had to contact tech support in over a year, whether
email or telephone, and when I did, within 3 days they sent me a long
detailed list of what to do to solve my problem.

Ditto. I had to literally change my credit card number to stop them
from charging me. On top of thayt, my emails were unanswered (except
for the standard form letter reply ...the kind that IBM shoot back).
Also my faxes were also unanswered. My long distance phone calls left
me hanging for 50 minutes before I was disconnected. And they were
SLOOOOOW. Lots of busy signals. Ugh.
I don't think there is a service I havent tried. Netcom was always good for
me. People don't seem to like it but it was good for me and still is good for
the freinds I have who still use it. I would be on it except I found the
perfect ISP and I aint tellen who it is.

I think Netcom is going the way of PSInet dial in coustomers. Netcom
just cant get its act together and make a profit on their now large
base of subsribers. Netcom probally would of made money if they were
not idiodic and decided to invest in costly foreign start ups. Because
of the massive amount of capital spent of thses failed investments,
service to Netcom has languished. I suggest you stick with IBMnet,
though they might have E mail trouble now, at lest, unlike Netcom you
wont have a problems getting on line, have a stable connection, and can
download up to 2 times faster than on Netcom.

I"ve been with netcom for almost a year and I HIGHLY RECCOMEND them. I
have tried several other ISPs and find Netcom the best for my
requirements. Their service dept has been excellent and available 24
hours. Yes, there are periods when I have to wait to get on-line but
never more than 5 or 10 mins, and very seldom. I will stay with Netcom
as long as they continue to offer the level of service I have come to
expect and enjoy. When I joined Netcom the price was 29.95 per month,
they dropped the price ( I assume because of competition) to 24.95 per
month without my asking. I hope you give Netcom some serious
consideration.

I bet you use a US Robotics modem and probably get a 26400 connect.
I get a pure 28800 connection *every* time I log on.
No toll free tech support ?
Tech support is mainly for those who don't know what they are doing.

You clipped out all of the previous message so that it looks like I

As I stated in the previous post, I get a pure 28800 connect every
time and believe that tech support is primarily for novice users.

I stand corrected sir.
This shows you what happens when you mix Usenet and <hic> scotch.
If you were the one being charged by netcom for services TWO MONTHS after
cancellation, you, sir, would be the one caring. Even though you don't
come across as a reasonable human being when it comes to netiquette, I do
take it you would care when companies like netcom choose to steal from you.

My credit card statement begs to differ with you. That fraudulent comany
put *ANOTHER* charge on my credit card, which gives me just as much a right
to be hear as you do. More so, in fact, since the language I choose to use
is far less of an eyesore, than yours.

I've always had good luck with Netcom. I fired AT&T over e-mail
problems. In Southern California, Jacksonville, FL and Denver, CO I've
had very good access with Netcom's POPs. Now that I'm in Denver I'm
going to get rid of one of my telnet accounts and replace it with a
Netcom shell account (there is no local shell access in Jacksonville.)
I do have backup accounts for POP busy signals and when I need to get my
e-mail. I can do that from the Unix machines at work, but sometimes our
connection through PSI is down )^;
