Netcom has elected to terminate it's shell accounts. Any comments
on this?

Rexx Electronic Communications has received a large number of inquiries
about our dialup shell service since the announcement. Rexx has been
offering Unix service for a number of years, and have no intent of
discontinuing it.
We will make every effort to accommodate any Netcom users who have been
displaced by the Earthlink networks merger, and make you feel right at
home.

Any interested parties can find information on our services at
http://www.rexx.com
If you have any questions about our service, please feel free to e-mail
your questions to us at ser...@rexx.com and we will do our best to answer
your questions.

It sucks. There needs to be found a way to keep the shell alive in
our web future.

Shell seekers can try the following free shell servers:

grex.org
sdf.lonestar.org
unix-shells.com

or you can telnet to my open command-line server at blekko.net.
it's not a complete replacement for a shell, but requires no login
or account to use, and I'll be adding more to it soon.

Read mindspring.users.shell, if you aren't already.

Many of us are going to either (in alphabetical order) eskimo.com,
rexx.com, or panix.com. I'm to the latter. But it's telnet-only
unless you live in NY/NJ. The other two have PPP dial-up and Terminal
dial-up, respectively, over a wide area.

Yes, I've had a free acount at the middle one - a.k.a. freeshell.org -
for most of a year, though I hardly use it. But it comes with web
space, even. Not at all bad. I get ping reports saying it goes down
a lot, though.

Interesting! Thanks.

Well, this sad day I find myself (more or less) in the "emeritus" category
at netcom.... so I thought I'd send a note to this newsgroup and say hello
as we are all taking off to hopefully greener pastures.

I was initially REALLY torqued when I found out that netcom was pulling
the plug on shell entirely. I have invested quite a bit of time thinking
that netcom was going to be a stable e-mail address for me. I work at
universities and those addresses change as I move, so I wanted a
"fixed" e-mail address for my personal correspondence.

So, I was (quietly) outraged when I got the "sunset" letter from
mindsprung or earthdink or whatever they are calling themselves today.

Yeah, I decided to hop over to panix as well, and it seems to be working
just fine so far. The other part of my plan is to take
netcom/mindding/earthpuck up on their offer of six months of (free) PPP
service, at which time I'll decide who is going to provide internet
connectivity from that point forward. As I may well be moving from NYC to
the midewest on that timescale, the timing is OK for me.

Actually, it is workable for me to have a telnet-only shell account for
e-mail. One of the main reasons that I strongly prefer to handle e-mail
this way is that when I'm working at a national lab, I can (almost) always
telnet out and read mail. Many of the unix beasts in such places may not
have a web browser installed. So being able to read mail through a
character-cell interface via telnet works very well for me.
Additionally, I *prefer* to read e-mail that way.

Of course, when I express these preferences to the public at large, I am
often regarded as some sort of mutant or primitive. My favorite quote was
being branded a "technophobe" by someone who was especially deeply enured
in the microsoft way of doing things. I embrace technology, when it makes
my life easier. Needing to use an ungaingly prosthesis like a web browser
to do something as critically important as exchange e-mail with people
strikes me as a giant step backwards in robustness and flexibility. The
liklihood that I will be able to read my e-mail from anywhere I go that
has some sort of a computer connected in some way to the internet
approaches 100 percent. More to the point, my odds are better than anyone
who buys into a client-side proprietary-interface way of getting
e-mail. This was a major reason why I picked up shell service at netcom
and abandoned CompuServe. And that justification remains as valid today
for me as it ever was.

>> It sucks. There needs to be found a way to keep the shell alive in

Yupo, I agree, which is why I chose to pay someone (panix) ten bucks a
month to keep it going for me.

Best wishes to all the former netcom shellers out there.

Just to add my two cents, I recently signed up for a shell account
with hardlink.com. They offer all the usual shell stuff, PPP with
local dialup numbers in a lot of the U.S., virtual domain web hosting,
etc, for $25/mo -- just three bucks more than what I've been paying
recently for shell only through Netcom. So far it's been working out
well (no business connection, etc, etc).

Shore.net, a highly regarded ISP in the Boston area, has a telnet shell
account for $11/month.

Go to http://www.shore.net/services/connect/ and scroll down to "Unix
Shell Account."

I received an e-mail from someone indicating they were going to
organize some alternative shell service. As for me, I'm finally
on IDSL and putting my own Linux box on the air, so the need for
hosted shell services isn't very high anymore. I'll just run
it into the ground and thank the powers that be for leaving it
alive as long as they did.

Only when there are the improper amount and placement of commas, then
they're reversed.

That was olagrande.net. See www.olagrande.net for details.
