That depends on a lot of factors including you.
IIRC, that message appears when your POP has to wait too long for the
verification to come back from Netcom's servers. When it does get the
proper response you are logged in rather than having to retype your
username and password. You DID type it correctly the first time. It
is a matter of network timing not being up to par.

Don't know 'bout the password problem, but several times I've logged on
with an incorrect user name-NC seems to accept many variations and outright
errors.....

I may have mistyped my password by a character or two -- I'm a fast
typist -- but this looks like it logged me in anyway.
And that worries me -- I don't want netcomk to log me in without the
correct password. How crackable are the passwords.
So, my questions are
a) has anyone else seen this message? and
b) how secure are our passwords??

You typed the password correctly. Due to lag the POP timed out befor it
got confermation and sent the message. It happens sometimes.

Once in a while.
: b) how secure are our passwords??
It all depends on the password. Your password should be 8 characters long
and consistof symbles, numerables and upper and lower case letters. You
should never use a name or a word in any language either forwards or
backwards. A good way off arriving at a secure password is to use the
first letters of the words in a line of words. For example; The Quick
Fox Jumped Over The Fence. The derived Password might be; tQfj0TF! you
could also use, Tq6j0tF!, _f_ being the 6th leter in the alphabet. It
would take a while for even a fast computer to brute force a match on
that. You just need to remember the phrase and the way you chose to
characterize it.
