Unlimited dimension

I would like to set a dimension value to "unlimited" but I am getting an error when I save the file back to NetCDF format. Is there any way to work around this issue? The dimension I would like to change is 'time'. A program I am creating this file for expects this dimension to be set to "UNLIMITED" but netcdf4excel expects a numerical value. Can anyone help me?
