from what i can gather, netboot.me requires outside activity. what i
am looking for is a simple boot cd pxe emulator that will emulate pxe
on a diskless machine that does not support it so my pxe server can
work as it is desigend to... supplying the correct configuration of an
operating system to load based on MAC addresses and pxelinux.0
configurations, tftp and dhcp.

is there a way to make netboot.me do this? or is there another
bootable setup that will do what I need? the diskless workstations
will be on a private network segment with no access to the internet
whatsoever. the existing pxe server works well for those machines
supporting pxe boot. i have a number of machines that do not that i
need a pxe emulator boot cd for.

any ideas/help will be appreciated.

Hi Chuck,

You sound like you're in search for iPXE http://ipxe.org/  That's the core of boot side of netboot.me and would take care of your request.   I can provide some simple help configuring or you can poke around on their website and figure it out from there.

Best,
Josh

any assistance would be greatly appreciated. i got my baptism under
fire on pxe booting on this past monday and just got our pxe server
working properly. now the boss wants all the non pxe stations to boot
from this server also. he is a type A new york personality which means
his hour is truthfully about 40 seconds or so. he believes this is a
simple thing to do and should take me no time at all.. yes for pxe
protocols it is simple now that i have o/s templates set up etc to
make a unique one for each workstation, but if i have to create
something new it wll take a while... so i am under a lot of stress to
figure this out.. i could probably figure it out ok but would take
time and research which he doesnt believe is needed.. so any help in
making a bootable cd that would emulate pxe would be more than
appreciated. i would expect a proper pxe emulation would be
transparent to my server so i just have to configure each new
workstation as i have done the real pxe stations.. my problem is
creating the boot cd and what to use.

yet again :) our diskless workstations that are non pxe either
support netboot of some kind other than pxe or do not support network
booting at all. he wants them all to boot diskless.

shame there is no edit option i can find.. would save a lot of
msgs.. i suggested he install pxe compliant net cards but he doesnt
want to spend the $.. claims it can be done with the built in
hardware. (why me?)

What model are these workstations?

If cards don't truly support PXE then you'll need to either boot from the CD, if the workstations support usb booting you could also install iPXE there, or you can use an internal disk if they have one following roughly what they have here http://forum.ipxe.org/showthread.php?tid=2837  but completely diskless would be out of the question.

NFS would be initialized further up the stack and if your current PXE setup is handling it fine iPXE should have no problems.

Also,  depending on what you get paid you can make a serious argument that buying something like this http://www.amazon.com/TRENDnet-Gigabit-Adapter-Card-TEG-PCITXR/dp/tech-data/B00023433U/ref=de_a_smtd would be a better business decision because you wouldn't have to install and support a second code base.

what he wants to do is boot from a cd that will then cause the
workstation to emulate a pxe bootable system and it will go out to our
pxe server and load up an operating system

i dont know the models they range from hp that have no disks to thin
clients to ancient p3-500 machines. he wants to be able to boot
anything that has no disk regardless of its type.

problem is with the net cards he doesnt want to involve tech time to
install them. as he gets an old machine in he wants to put a disk in
and just boot it from the network .. a majority of things will be
running test routines but some will be real workstations net booting.
i want to avoid changing code systems this is why im looking for a
setup that i can burn on a cd that will make my pxe server believe the
workstation is a real pxe workstation even if it has no netboot at all
natively.

iPXE will do ya then.  Go beat up the documentation and if you have any questions on features you'd be better off posting in the iPXE mailing list as they can better answer your question.
