Ilove making Waldorf stars. They look so beautiful when stuck to a window, and are especially magical when catching the pale winter light. They are deceptively easy to make, and are lovely decorations all year round.
Below I have given step-by-step instructions to make a simple, eight-pointed Waldorf star, but there are many variations which can be found online! Here I have shown a multi-coloured star, but single colour stars also look beautiful.
I have a few more wintry posts planned over the next few weeks on how we will be celebrating Christmas as a secular family, some tips for a greener Christmas, and sharing the gifts we have bought Frida. Have you seen my Montessori-friendly gift guide and my list of Winter books we are enjoying?
Working at the ALMA Observatory in Chile, home to the largest radio telescope in the world, academics from Leeds are among researchers who have gathered a large, detailed collection of observations for the first time and have been able to solve the mystery.
They discovered the ethereal shapes are caused by the gravitational pull of companion stars or large planets meaning that Jupiter or Saturns gravity could distort the stellar winds to create a spiral shape around our sun as it decays and dies.
Professor John Plane, Professor of Atmospheric Chemistry at Leeds' School of Chemistry, said: When stars reach the end of their lives, they tend to swell up to become giant red stars, and start ejecting heavy elements like iron, magnesium and silicon.
A planetary nebula is the ball of gas ejected from the star, which is produced by the stellar wind blowing material away from the stellar surface. It was known previously that these are not always spherical.
The reason for this is the presence of a companion star or a planet, too small and close to the giant star to be directly observable, but whose gravity is sufficient to distort the dust outflow.
Step 1. Paint your pumpkins using a matte craft paint in a dark color (like navy blue, charcoal gray, or black) and allow them to dry completely. If you like, you can also use faux black pumpkins and skip this step!
Step 3. Use the Star Thick Materials Shape Punches to make lots of stars in varying sizes from the hologram vinyl and hologram glitter self-adhesive sheets. You can also punch some stars out of the matte white vinyl and add those to the mix!
Step 4. Use a pencil to draw some stars on the back of the hologram vinyl and glitter sheets, then cut those by hand using the Orange-handled Scissors. If you have little helpers, they can also cut out a few hand drawn stars using Fiskars Kids Scissors!

To apply gold leaf, brush a coat of sizing onto the box, let the sizing dry a bit (wait about 15 minutes), then lay sheets of gold leaf onto the sticky sizing. Use a fine cloth to burnish the gold leaf onto the box, and try not to handle too much with your fingers. The oils from your hand will cause the metal to tarnish. Seal the gold leaf as soon as possible.
Work with just a few boxes or lids at a time, as letting the sizing sit for too long will make them less tacky, making it difficult for the gold leaf to adhere to the boxes. I found working with 4-5 boxes or lids as a time was a good amount for the time it took to apply the gold leaf.
Most of the lids fit snugly onto the boxes, but the looser lids are secured with clear tape. I might use tape on all of the boxes to discourage curious little hands from taking premature peeks at the surprises inside.
Hi! i know this was posted a while ago but I am just seeing it and after perusing DIY advent calendars landed on this and I am so excited ! I was wondering if you think it is better to paint first?! and also was sealer you used after the gold leaf is put on the stars? thank you!
This is such a wonderful idea! I love alternative advent calendars, especially when they are so lovely and creative. Much better than a cheap chocolate each morning (although I do kinda love that too >:) Immy x
You on the other hand, you saw beauty in everything. The world. The stars. The little cracks in the floor tiles that gave the palace character. The things anyone else would miss. You even saw beauty in him.
Not that it was hard to admire you. No. You could so much as breathe, and his breath would hitch. Every movement you made was enough for him to go weak at the knees. The soft gleam to your eyes; the gentle tone of your voice; the graceful way you fought your battles. It was all admirable, and he was your greatest admirer.
There was only so much of this barrage he could take. It was all too much for his exhausted mind. He forced his eyes to open, to bottleneck the endless train of harsh truths. Or what he believed to be truths.
He kept walking through the halls, hearing the beginnings of a storm from outside. A faint rain sprinkled the roof more than a hundred feet above him. It would have been calming if he could sleep, or if you were with him.
Tonight he found you laying on the floor in the throne room. From outside you could hear the growing thunder rumbling like an old god, and the rain pattering the roof, more aggressive now than minutes before.
You could see tears start to line his eyes as he looked down to your joined hands. You remained silent for a moment, processing what Maul had said, and that every word of it was genuine. The rain was the only thing to break the silence in the empty, echoing throne room.
There was a moment when his sobs broke, and he took a few quick deep breaths. In this moment, you took his face his your hand, and lifted it, so that his eyes met yours. His eyes were red, more red than usual, and despite his dark complection, you could clearly see the trails where his tears had fallen, and followed. He tried to look away from you, but you coaxed him back to you.
Mauna Kea is located on the American island of Hawaii, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It is a volcano culminating at more than 4 000m altitude, which hosts several observatories and the largest and most powerful telescopes in the world (it will host one of the Extremely Large Telescopes: the Thirty Meter Telescope). It is one of the most important scientific observation sites in the world. Thanks to its geographical situation and climate (little humidity), the island offers an exceptional night sky, very dark with a very pure air, ideal conditions to observe the stars.
Located in the Pyrenees mountains, between Spain and France, the Pic du Midi reaches an altitude of 2800m and hosts an astronomical and meteorological observatory. Because of its proximity to our offices, it remains one of the favourite places to observe the stars. Accessible using the unique aerial tramway, the site offers an unobstructed view on the mountain range or on the sea of clouds that occasionally forms. The observatory offers stays, guided tours and workshops led by astronomers and scientists. The Pic du Midi has obtained the Dark Sky Reserve label enabling it to enhance and protect its sky as a natural and cultural heritage. Thanks to its involvement and actions (public education, awareness of light pollution, responsible lighting), the site offers exceptionally pure nights. Today, it is the only Dark Sky Reserve labelled by the International Dark-sky Association in France!
The sleepy town of Franeker has an unexpected secret. Undisturbed historic houses line the water-locked cobbled streets where a city hall and bakery sit stoically awaiting visitors - only the ringing bell from the occasional bicycle signals someone is in town.
