Sun "as" incredibly slow for large programs

When compiling a 10,000 line Pascal program on a Sun 2, the assembly
phase took an excessive length of time to complete - thirty-three (33)
hours. It completed successfully and the output was apparently correct.
The problem appears to be an ill-designed optimization algorithm for long
jumps.
