what to do with rose hips

We have masses of rose hips near our house (wild & otherwise). I've
often wondered what to do with them. For example -- if we want to make
tea with them, do we grind them first? dry them first? do we somehow
get rid of the outside wax? How about making jam out of them -- same
questions.
