How about the Rotisserie League type of games, where you draft
teams and evaluate their performance based on the current season.
Does anyone have any experience with any of these? I have received
ads for any number of them which sound good, but they all seem to
cost a fair amount.
Would anyone be interested in forming a Rotisserie League on the
net?

I made up a form of rotisserie league for football this season (in
net.games.pbm) and it was very successful. I graduate this year but
I fully intend to make up my own baseball game if I find work at
a site that is:
a) on the net, and
b) amenable to this sort of activity.
Meanwhile, let's not wait for me! Let's have someone go ahead and do it!

Okay, I'm ready to take part in organizing a baseball simulation on
the net, provided, I get firm commitments from about a half a
dozen others willing to contribute... with at least a couple of
local people ( waterloo area ). I have a friend who participated
in this very idea via surface mail last season and he completely
enjoyed it. I can get all of the necessary parameters from him ( and,
I'm certain , his participation ).
We'll have to get started fast... I can already smell opening day!!!
I can only do a fair share as I have an incredible amount of normal
work to do already. Any takers??

I've played in many Strat-O-Matic leagues and enjoyed the games immensely.
It costs about $20/year for the new cards, after investing in the game. It
simulates action quite well, and the company tries to add some extra variables
here and there. In fact, I've fully automated it here on the VAX, including
the player cards (lots of data entry!), charts, dice, and stats (accumulation
and reports). The Strat company themselves just announced a computerized
version, though it doesn't sound as "complete" as mine. Participation in a
strat league is lots of fun... the drafting is often the highlight of the
season, unless you're in the race for the pennant... We used to play 56-game
seasons...
I'm currently in a Rotisserie League, run on the net within DEC. About
the only cost incurred here is the book describing the league setup (it's worth
the price even if you don't plan on playing in a league...). No further money
is needed, even though some could be involved if the participants wished. It
provides even more enjoyment than a Strat league did, because of following the
current season closely. Strat cards are, of course, based on last year's stats,
and you play with those cards throughout the next baseball season. Rotisserie
results are based on every regular season game - you wind up looking through
the box scores for your players' stats, often ignoring the actual major league
pennant races. If one of your players hits a grand slam to beat your favorite
ML team, you're happy about it...
The toughest thing about the league over the net is the draft. We add our
pick to a master list, and forward it to the next drafter. It's quite time
consuming, but a lot of fun...

I too would be interested in a net.strat or net.apba league.
I am also interested, having made some efforts along the same lines
(using the Maryland Windows Package); school and job have slowed progress
on it to a snail's pace. An overview of your system, such as how it plays,
design considerations, etc. might prove more valuable than the source, at
least for me.
