Statistics for UNIX

I have made a brief study of statistical software for UNIX systems. There
are, of course, packages like "S" (AT&T) or Minitab; the only relatively
cheap yet complete stat package that I am aware of is perlman@wanginst
(Gary Perlman at the Wang Institute) package called UNIX|STAT or |STAT.
It is available in C source for UNIX, XENIX, or MS-DOS systems. It handles
a lot of variables and cases and is quite fast. It provides multiple
regression, ANOVA, cross-tabulation, etc., with some DBMS functions.

Another possibility would be using some of the IBM PC packages written
in Microsoft BASIC (if you have BAStoC, BASMARK, or Microsoft BASIC). I
have considered moving the econometric package ECSTAT to my XENIX machine
for that reason. Older versions of Microstat are written in Microsoft
BASIC; I suppose an enquiry to Ecosoft would be in order.

There is rumored to be an old version of BMD that was placed in the ACM
archives. That version is one from the late 1960's and is written in
FORTRAN II/IV. An IBM PC version of this software (NOT the one currently
supported by BMDP) was sold briefly for $350 two years ago.
