I have heard rumors of a special film (or was it special processing?)
which gives both negatives AND slides from the same film.

There is a Kodak bw-film (ASA32) which gives you a negativ but with a
special process-kit it gives you a positiv. I never tried it because I
cannot develop my films at home (at least currently) and I couldn't find
anybody who did it for me.
