In the Venice Cup, the semifinalists qualifying from the round-robin stage
were BRITAIN (Grattan Endicott NPC; Michelle Brunner-Gillian Scott-Jones,
Nicola Smith-Pat Davies, Sally Horton-Sandra Landy) and CHINESE TAIPEI
(Harry Lin NPC; Stella Wei-H.S.F. Wang, Joan Lin-Helen O'Yang, Jennifer
Lai-Phoebe Lin). The seeded semifinalists were UNITED STATES I (Dan Morse NPC;
Kathy Wei-Judi Radin, Jacqui Mitchell-Gail Greenberg, Carol Sanders-
Betty Ann Kennedy) and FRANCE (Alain Levy NPC; Sylvie Willard-Veronique
Bessis; Ginette Chevalley-Danielle Gaviard, Fabienne Pigeaud-Catherine Saul).
The conditions of contest specify that the pairings for the semifinals are to
be United States vs. Chinese Taipei and Britain vs. France.
(Unfortunately, the release from which I am obtaining this information
appears to have been slightly garbled at this point. It is not clear whether
the Bermuda Bowl semifinals have in fact concluded by now, or whether
more boards remain to be played. The scores appear to be of the right size
for 96 boards or a low-scoring 128; I lack information on how many boards
constitute the semifinal, but 160 seems to ring a bell.)
The last available report from the Bermuda Bowl semifinals indicate that
BRAZIL currently leads UNITED STATES by 213-191, while AUSTRIA leads
ISRAEL 263-213. The Venice Cup semifinals went to UNITED STATES I by
298-160 over CHINESE TAIPEI and BRITAIN 221-218 over France.
More details will be posted as I receive them. Anyone with better
information is encouraged to post a correction or addendum.
