THE BOOK OF KELLS by R. A. MacAvoy

A book review by Evelyn C. Leeper

John Thornburn, through Celtic music and artwork, opens a portal back
to Tenth Century Ireland. A young woman of that time, Ailesh, comes
through, fleeing from Viking raiders. John and she return, along with
Derval O'Keane, a friend of John's who just happens to be studying Celtic
history, literature, language, etc. What you start out with is an old
standby of a science fiction premise (time travel); what you end up with is
basically an historical adventure novel. After MacAvoy's first four novels,
I was really looking forward to this one. Though it's competent, it doesn't
have the magic touch that her earlier works did. I can't say that I
strongly recommend it.
