hplabs is clean, and fortune is clean. this leaves foros1 and hpda to
be the possible culprits. I've seen flakeys out of hpda on and off-- can
someone take a look at the system? I don't believe it is foros1 because I
THINK it runs notes which doesn't have this problem. Stupid line eaters...

"foros1" running Notes! Gack, I'm being insulted!!!! Nope, "foros1" is
running Netnews 2.10.1 (soon to switch to you-know-what), and I fixed the
line-eater bug myself. "hpda", on the other hand, I have definite
worries about. For some reason, their system never responds to "sendsys"
requests, which seems to indicate that they're not running the latest
software. (How long ago was "sendsys" invented?)

Happy hacking!

I found it amusing that the following article about the line

has a self-preservation instinct!):

Guido van Rossum's message was broken, but I doubt it was because of
the line eater bug. He forgot a primary rule of the net, one that is
probably in the 'Introduction to Usenet' document but really ought to
be printed by 'postnews' before it lets you make a fool of yourself:
Never, EVER, attempt to be subtle on Usenet.

Mark Twain's 'The Stolen White Elephant' is the standard introductory

Alright! AWWWLLLLRIGHT! I did it. Yes I did it. And I'm *glad* -- do you
hear? *GLAD*!!!

Ok. Just kidding. But think of it. You know the Law of the Preservation
of Lines? I mean for every line lost somewhere another (or the same one)
pops up. Some poor secreatary using a Xerox Star somewhere keeps getting
lines from net news in his/her memos and has no idea what's going on...

OK, I admit: I was playing games with you. Thought it was easy enough
to see the forgery because the "Lines:" header was correct. Also note
the trailing citation (repeated below). I promise I won't do it again
(it wouldn't be funny anyway :-).

Actually, I have to wonder to myself whether guido hasn't scored again.
Perhaps the sentence that got truncated originally read something like this:

>> Anybody who thinks this was really a truncated message has forgotten about

>> to anybody that this might be the case?

Well, it certainly occurred to me.
