Perhaps there is a reasonable way to comment entries in the "active" file
(in news version 'B', I forget what's what in 'A') and provide methods for
retrieving this information in situation-dependent ways. For example, if
a user wants to create a new group he could first consult the active list
and its comments to find a relevent group. Of course, a more experienced
UseNetter would only wish to peruse subsets such as "net.all" or "fa.all".
Other situations should be foreseeable, I won't discuss them here except
for the issue of adding the comments to the "active" file. There seem to
be a couple obvious ways: 1) when a newsgroup is created prompt for the
comment, or 2) manually edit the file. The first solution appears nicer,
but how is the comment info passed between sites? And with either
solution, who provides the initial comments to be installed at every (hmm)
site? The second method is more voluntary and would perhaps only be needed
at sites with more "novice" (and fewer overall?) news participants. Anyway,
either this comment scheme or something similar could be useful in lessening
the number of unwanted newgroups. Thoughts? scott <menlo70!sri-unix!sjk>

One point about a gateway is that the digests should not come out,
except perhaps during the interface period. One thing that is
required, however is that an address exist for the digest moderator
to mail to to send an item over the usenet. Although space digest and
info-micro digest are not subject to this, other more moderated digests
like sfl and human-nets are full of included comments and spoiler warnings.
If the moderator includes a comment of his own, he must be told to make
sure he sends the comment out on the USENET.
Who moderates info-micro - this should be checked into.

At my site, I keep a file called /etc/newsgroups. I got the idea from
cca. You saw a copy of the file sent out by Mark Horton as a list of
groups that were known to exist. Eventually, there will probably be
a B news control message to update such a file and the ngfile.

No sooner had it been decreed that net.micro exists when a whole
flurry of mail follows saying well, maybe we should wait for this
that and some third thing. Sigh! The question of how many postings
does it take to establish a newsgroup makes the one about angels on
a pin look easy! I for one will start posting to net.micro and
if a gateway to heaven or wherever opens up we can always let it
die and go to the other place!
