16 October 1986. There are three basic subcategories of netwide
! newsgroups: "net", "mod" and "talk". The "talk" category is the
! first part of a co-ordinated renaming of newsgroups being done by the
! "backbone" and associated sites. Within a few months, the "net"
! distribution will cease to exist, and there will be a set of new
! top-level divisions which will imply organization rather than
! distribution. The "mod" groups will eventually undergo conversion into
! the same name space.
