pointers to object-oriented C, and smalltalk prototyping

I'm looking for any information that anyone can give me on current
implementations of object-oriented languages (esp. C) on host-based
systems (esp. VAXen). Are there any good ones in existance? What are
people's experiences with them?

Also, a couple of Smalltalk questions: which book is better to start with
(blue or orange(?)) if we're just trying to get a feel for the language, to
see if it fits our needs. I read both a couple of years ago, but most of
the knowledge has dribbled out my ears, it seems. And, I have been told by
a number of people that Smalltalk is great for prototyping a system,
especially new user interfaces. Has anyone done any work on porting such
prototypes to different hosts/different languages so you don't have to start
the implementation over from scratch?
