Corporate Culture...

A friend of mine who has now worked at Sun Microsystems for a few months
complained recently that the place he used to work at was "more fun" and
they were more into partying...

His comment got me thinking about the indefinables that really make working
somewhere either wonderful or terrible. They are things like 'friendliness',
'accessability', 'feeling like you belong', 'feeling like you matter', 'being
able to have a say in decisions' and so on.

But this kind of stuff is impossible to learn when interviewing, so how do we
ever know which places are good and which aren't?

In an attempt to help answer this, I'd like to ask everyone who reads this
note to send me a short *mail* message about where they work, what they do and
don't like about it (disregard the actual tasks, please), and what they would
say to a friend about working there. If you've worked at other places, both
good and bad, please drop me a note about that too.

[Actually, let's consider a few types of friends - male/female single person,
male/female married or otherwise engaged, and male/female single or married
with children]

When we're done I'll try to come up with a "Guide to Corporate Cultures" and
post it to net.jobs. Who knows, maybe we can actually relay some worthwhile
information!!

I'd also be interested in hearing about non-traditional work environments!
