I got to see "Crumb" recently after waiting until the last day to watch the
video (I should learn to watch them sooner when I rent them)

"Crumb" was a very well-done biography (of sorts) about Mr. Crumb, and was
unashamedly honest. If you've been a minor fan of underground comics, you will
probably be quite surprised to learn many of the things revealed in the film.
My wife certainly was...

If you rent this movie expecting to be titillated and get a lot of nudity,
you'll probably be disappointed. If you're sincerely interested in the person
behind the art, you'll be fascinated, though don't be surprised if somethings
may repel you...

Flaws: Soundtrack is mono and has some background chatter (but not much).
Timeline of Crumb's work and experiences is a bit dis-jointed.
A little too much focus on Crumb's fetishes, sex-life and sexually
explicit material. Very little of the non-sexual material is shown,
even the drug-related stuff...

Gems: Crumb's brief commentary on Larry Welz and "Cherry".
Seeing Crumb's wife and kids.
The unabashed and straight-on look at Crumb's family (brothers and
mother).

Rated: R for lots of graphic language, some "real life" nudity and a fair
amount of graphic cartoon nudity and sex. Definately not for 12 year-
olds, and they probably would be bored most of the time anyways.

Riffer Rating: 4 out of 5 stars.

Chilling, isn't it? I mean, the whole movie but this in specific. One of
the brothers, the gentleman who sits on spikes and runs ribbon through his
intestines, sits out on Second Street in San Francisco sometimes. I see
him occasionally. It's a trifle surreal.

It's not hard to see how R. Crumb developed a very classic Oepidus complex.
And it goes a *long* ways to explain his particular fetishes and the way he
tends to draw women...

Max. And strangely enough, those are legitimate yoga ceremonies. Well, based
on them anyways...

I'm sure it is.

Oh COOL. what did he say? I'm a friend of Larry's from when i used to live
in CA - but I haven't seen this movie. I used to be the female voice going
"tee hee" on the answering machine when you called the number listed in
the magazine as the contact number for Cherry publishing :) Larry always
wanted to draw me but it never happened. I put my foot down.

Nothing complimentary. I don't remember the words, but towards the end of
the film he gets a call from some hollywood type who wants Crumb to get
involved with the Cherry movie deal. You only hear Crumb's end of the conver-
sation but he seemed to think Larry Welz was nothing but a cheap pornographer
and that "Cherry" is just a piece of drivel.

I found it amusing because of course, to a mundane, there's little difference
between Crumb's and Welz's work. They've both drawn a lot of explicit sexual
imagery, drug usage, and violence. They've even both drawn incestual story-
lines. But Crumb doesn't consider himself to have sold out (uh, yeah, right).

Someone from "Mother Jones" magazine seemed to consider Crumb with, well some
respect, but also very disturbed by some of his imagery. She didn't like the
"Joe Blow" piece, for example.

I recommend watching the movie. It's fascinating, in a very coarse and dirty
sort of way. It's also a bit dated, as the stuff they show was shot over a
period of years, and wasn't released until several more years after the fact.

Our loss. :)

:)
Larry was probably thrilled. I mean, Cherry IS basically drivel. That is
sort of the POINT of Cherry.
