In July, I was lucky enough to visit Vancouver and EXPO. On
the whole it was a well run and interesting "World's Fair". The main
problem for fair-goers is the large number of people also trying to
see it. This meant that to see all the major attractions would take
several days.
As for general BC support for EXPO, it is my impression that
it was more than the left-wingers who are mad at EXPO, because it is
the creature of the Socreds and Mr. Bennett. When I was there, the
newspapers were reporting a province wide disappointment with EXPO.
The Socreds apparently promised a "big shot in the arm" to BC tourism
and an economic payoff to all. However, the reality then was that
tourism was down on the mainland outside Vancouver. Vancouver Island
visits were up only slightly and that was far below estimates. The
payoff for EXPO was not being shared outside Vancouver. (Possibly by
now this has turned around.)

Of course, "what they had hoped for" means "enough to offset the
massive deficit from Expo"... so we lose big either way.

Actually, for even more confusion, I think that in Ontario a
REGULAR flashing green light means "proceed with caution" too, but a
RAPIDLY flashing green means "left turn". (Presumably for intersections
where the gov't was too cheap to replace the lights by lights with arrow
signals.)

We absorbed some massive debts in Louisiana as a result of the New
Orleans World Fair two years ago. It was an extremely foolish idea to
sponsor an extravaganza like that here, especially during the summer.
Our taxpayers will be paying for that for years, and at just
the wrong time; this state's economy is largely based around the
slumping oil industry. World's fairs and "expos" are generally poor
investments for those who sponsor them, and especially so lately.
People are simply tired of them; there seems to have been one every
other year somewhere, and I have never known any city to do financially
well on them, overall. But they still seem to be promoted.
