undoc option -s in crypt(1) BSD 4.2

I was look in the code for crypt(1) a few days ago and noticed that
there was a -s option that causes crypt to work different. It is
noted in the code that it is a security flag. Does this improve
crypt? Can it broking by MIT, if the rumor about them have a program
to break crypt?
