I still have the little 3 left over from an upgrade to an 8550. Our 750 had
a bad bootblock, so we had to start it from tape. This was still better
than the 6420 which would hang if the console got unplugged. Oh wait, the
8530 got mad if the PDP PC thingy was undone too.

Ugh. Maybe I should take those off my resume.

: Dang. Well, we've migrated from Rhap, anyway. Follow up to net.computers.
: os.other? (Can you BELIEVE that there's no net.computers.os.vms? The
: *nerve* of these people! Poopie heads, all of them, I say!)

DECUS is now giving away free VMS PAKs for personal use. I'm more than a
little tempted to pick up a used VAXstation and run news on it at home.

Our 11/750 was rock solid until the day it was retired by the sysadmin who
came after me. (I couldn't have done it, myself -- too much like taking
your best dog to the vet to be "put to sleep.")

The 8530, OTOH, was flaky as hell until DEC finally figured out the problem.
They replaced every damned thing on that computer except the "8530" lettering
(and I think they were considering that as a final resort) until they FINALLY
bit the bullet and put a new backplane in the thing. It was pretty solid
after that.

>Ugh. Maybe I should take those off my resume.

Nah. At worst, it makes for good conversation. At best, you have the
situation I once had -- the equivalent of "You from Joisey? *I'M* from
Joisey! What exit?"

If you can deal with the [lack of] speed, sure. ;-)

No, no, no, Peter, I was just *kidding* with the subject line. Sorry for
the false alarm; I'm certainly not suggesting net.computers.os.vms. For
that matter, we might as well have net.computer.os.unix.multics. <g>

I don't think that was Multics. I think it ran RSTS, though. Probably in
emulation mode.

It was about as Multics as Peter's bread is a filet mignon. :)

Heh. Actually, I just realized we badly need:

net.computers.abacus

P.S.
Send me mail Vince, I have a few things to contribute towards the
net.humour hiearchy but can't post to them directly. *sniffle*
