Desktop Wallpaper - "CH-53E Super Stallion & KC-130 Hercules"
Two U.S. Marine Corps CH-53E Super Stallion helicopters assigned to
Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron-772 (HMM-772) receive fuel from a
KC-130 Hercules while each transport High Mobility Multipurpose
Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWV) over the Gulf of Aden. The reserve squadron
based at Willow Grove, Pa., is currently attached to the 24th Marine
Expeditionary Unit Special Operations Capable (SOC), supporting
mission in support of the war against terrorism.
Description: The CH-53D/E is a medium lift helicopter designed to
transport personnel, supplies and equipment in support of amphibious
and shore operations.
Background: The CH-53D/E was ordered in the early 1960s to satisfy a
Marine Corps requirement for a heavy lift helicopter. It has since
been replaced in the heavy lift mission by the CH-53E Super Stallion.
All Marine Corps CH-53D/E helicopters are currently assigned to Marine
Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay. The CH-53D/E, along with the CH-46E,
is
slated for replacement by the MV-22 Osprey.
Mission: The KC-130 is a multi-role, multi-mission tactical
tanker/transport which provides the support required by Marine Air
Ground Task Forces. This versatile asset provides in-flight refueling
to both tactical aircraft and helicopters as well as rapid ground
refueling when required. Additional tasks performed are aerial
delivery of troops and cargo, emergency resupply into unimproved
landing zones within the objective or battle area, airborne Direct Air
Support Center, emergency medevac, tactical insertion of combat troops
and equipment, evacuation missions, and support as required of special
operations capable Marine Air Ground Task Forces.
