Re: [Net-Gold] CSA Acquires Community of Science; Will Publish and
Distribute Periodicals : Cambridge Scientific Abstracts (CSA)

Thanks to Jay Bhatt for this important news regarding COS
now becoming available on Cambridge Scientific Abstracts,
(CSA) a fee based institutional subscription databank
provider of databases.

When I was first introduced to CSA, I found a search
interface that was not much more powerful than search engines
in that one could only search using one search step, but there
were search capabilities that made it possible to be much
more precise and complex in that one search step than one
could in the garden variety of internet search engine.

One day, a couple of years ago give or take, a colleague
mentioned to me that the CSA search interface had improved.
That turned out to be one of the understatements of the decade.
At one o'clock one night soon after when I made some time,
I checked out this new version of the databank software, going
to the advanced search. While not a big fan of multiple dialog
boxes with drop down menus, I persisted. After some time
I discovered the search history feature so that now in CSA
one could combine previous search steps or integrate them
into a current search step. This was a big leap in improving
this tool, but I then experimented and discovered that one
could search one group of terms within so many words of
text of another group of terms, a feature called proximity
searching and an application of this feature called nesting
terms on either side of a positional operator. Now we had
leaped in one single bound to systems like Dialog, OVID,
SilverPlatter and Datastar which also have this advanced
but powerful and important searching capability.

Here is an example of such a search statement and what it
finds in a CSA database, Physical Education Index.

(baseball or football or soccer or hockey or basketball)
within 5 (history or historical or cultural or culturally or
sociology or sociological)

Search #1 Edit | Save | Delete | Return to Search |
Run Search | Save as Alert

(baseball or football or soccer or hockey or basketball)
within 5 (history or historical or cultural or culturally or
sociology or sociological)

1516 results found in Physical Education Index +

This is an example of a resulting citation and how this
feature works in finding content within records in this
database.

Excerpt from the abstract

Encouraged by the smile, the boy kicked the ball towards
the British soldier. By this one act, Nagendraprasad
Sarbadhikary, hailing from an old Kayastha family of 19th
century Calcutta, passed into history. He became the first
Bengali [read Indian] to kick a football.

Note that the words counted in proximity searching probably
do not count words like he, the to and a.

"CSA Illumina is designed to provide a simple, more
user-friendly approach to searching for novice users while
maintaining powerful options for users who require them.
The interface provides access to more than 100 databases
published by CSA and its publishing partners."

CSA Acquires Community of Science, Inc.

Expanding CSA's Products for Research Institutions

BETHESDA, Maryland, USA (12 December 2005) -- CSA has acquired Community
of Science (COS) a leading Internet
site for the global R&D community. Over the last 15 years, COS has
established itself as the leader in grant funding
opportunities and researcher expertise information.

Community of Science, originally a spin-off of
The Johns Hopkins University, facilitates the business
of worldwide R&D. It represents more than
1,300 universities, associations, and other
research institutions comprising more than 480,000
scholars and researchers. COS builds relevant,
Web-enabled Expertise Management and content
services to connect its members with scholarly
information and resources. COS services include:
COS Expertise, the inventory and network of detailed,
first person profiles of scientists and scholars;
COS Funding Opportunities , the largest inventory
of currently available grant information;
COS Abstract Management System , an online
publishing and meeting management solution for
universities and professional societies; and several
research literature indexes.

While maintaining users' current access to the COS
products, these products will also be integrated into
CSA Illumina, CSA's highly acclaimed access platform.
This year, CSA Illumina will have more than 180 million
searches on 100 databases. Users will now have the
most comprehensive combination of funding opportunities,
literature indexes, and scholar profiles within a single
service, CSA Illumina.

Hence COS information will be searchable in a powerful
search software making access to the information in this
resource far easier to locate.

"Community of Science (COS) is the leading global
resource for hard-to-find information critical to scientific
research and other projects across all disciplines.
We aggregate valuable information so you spend less
precious time and money searching for the information
you need, leaving you more time and money for your
projects."
