Subject: [Net-Gold] HISTORY: ART: Ancient Near East
Greetings Net Gold Members,
Special thanks to Linda for posting the Cuneiform
Site:
Cuneiform Tablets - From the Library of Congress
http://international.loc.gov/intldl/cuneihtml/
I often did my art lessons interdisciplinary with
social studies. My Middle East lessons were done
pre-Internet (for me). I used slides I made from
books.
This is what I did with Middle East.
I did foil tooling (repousse) as an art project (we
looked at all metal work from the Middle East) and
gave social studies teachers clay and some scratch
sticks to do their own cuneiform. I fired their clay
projects for them.
I have one of my foil tooling projects on IAD:

Scroll down (or click link at top).
The ceramic plates have border designs made from
handmade cylinder seals. We made our cylinder seals
from air dry clay to save time. Seals made this way
will deteriorate if they get wet - but they lasted
just fine for this project. I kept the ones I made and
used them for many years.
Another project we did was foil tooled boxes. A
cardboard box was made and the foil wrapped over that.
Our boxes were about 4" square. My box template fit on
8 1/2 x 11 photocopy paper....with the actual foil
being made a tad bit larger (1/4 inch tabs made) to
fold over the edges of the box. Students designed the
sides - top and bottom of the box on the photocopy
template.
Another project was ceramics of ancient Iran. I had
slides of many great effigy vessels. Student made
their own effigy vessels. All functional ceramics.
------------------------------
I don't have a lot of Middle East resources on my site
- but here is a good collection of links:
Art of Ancient Near East:

This was a favorite work of art for many students:

I also tied in Islamic art with my units (when we did
the foil tooling). Here are som Islamic Art links:
Are there art teachers on this list? Would you like to
see art lesson ideas using the resources that I post?
Art and social studies are a good mix. Working
interdisciplinary can give students some memorable
experiences.
