A Taylor lawyer says he thinks authorities are seeking to discredit his
account that an older, well-dressed Indian man helped terror defendant
Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab board Flight 253 from Amsterdam, Netherlands, to
Detroit without a passport.

FBI investigators who questioned him Tuesday morning asked the same basic
questions they asked passengers just after the flight ended. He said he
suspects sloppy security has led to a cover-up.

Don't blame us for the undies bomber - blame the feds.

That was message the CEO of Delta Airlines delivered to his employees,
saying the airline has complied with every government security rule since
9/11 to keep passengers safe.

"Having this occur again is disappointing to all of us," Richard Anderson
said in a recorded New Year's Eve message. "You can be certain we will
make our points very clearly in Washington."

Also, the captain and crew of Northwest Airlines Flight 253, who safely
landed the plane while a suspected Al Qaeda terrorist was being tackled,
will get commendations next week "for their diligence and the work they
did to make sure everybody got to Detroit safely," said Anderson.

Delta owns Northwest, which had its Flight 253 targeted on Christmas Day
by a Nigerian with a bomb stashed in his skivvies.

An investigation is under way to figure out how Umar Abdulmutallab, 23,
managed to get on the flight out of Amsterdam even after his father warned
the feds he was a Muslim fanatic.

Detroit -- A federal customs and border protection official reversed
himself today, admitting a passenger from Northwest Flight 253 was placed
in handcuffs, searched and released after a canine alerted officers to his
carry-on luggage.

Ronald G. Smith, chief U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer in the
Detroit area, sent an email to The Detroit News late Thursday apologizing
that the information on the passenger -- which was reported to federal
investigators by a pair of Taylor attorneys who were passengers on the
flight -- was not made available earlier.

Federal officials had denied the details of the incident despite repeated
accounts by attorneys Kurt and Lori Haskell of Taylor who say they saw a
man get questioned by federal officials and be led away from the airport
baggage area in handcuffs after a sniffer dog reacted to something in the
man's carry-on luggage.

The couple said the man, who appeared to be in his early 30s and of Indian
descent, was taken to a room for questioning and later led out of that
room in handcuffs.

In the email, which was also sent to the couple, Smith said he had just
received a piece of information he did not have previously and hopes "it
will clear up the matter."

Smith said the man was handcuffed and escorted to a room where he was
interviewed and searched. Nothing was found. The man was not arrested or
detained, and no further information was available about him, Smith said.

Is Janet Napolitano to blame for Flight 253 security failure?

Republicans have focused blame for the security failures of Northwest
Flight 253 on Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. But there are
other reasons that many conservatives are dissatisfied with her.

'A convenient scapegoat'

Secretary Napolitano can be a convenient scapegoat both for President
Obama and for the Republicans and her remarks [on Sunday] just added fuel
to the fire, says Julian Zelizer, a historian at Princeton University, who
released a new book this week on national security policy, "Arsenal of
Democracy: The Politics of National Security From World War II to the War
on Terrorism."

For Obama, the focus on Napolitano takes attention away from the rest of
the administration. For Republicans, its a way to avoid discussing the
homeland security system which was put into place under Republicans, he
adds.

The public might accept a Napolitano rebuke or resignation as sufficient
action, Professor Zelizer says. Even for the public, theres something
about a person who made a mistake thats more satisfying than looking more
broadly at whats gone wrong in the system: If its just one person who made
a mistake, you can replace or reprimand that person, but if the system is
the problem, its a lot harder.

We should all be thankful that quick-thinking passengers and flight crew
members were willing to become involved. And we will see increased
security measures put into place that we hope will keep terrorists out of
the air and the United States.

What is almost certain is that a beleaguered airline industry trying to do
business in a lingering recession may suffer additional economic blows,
probably resulting in more lost jobs. Ordinary people who want to fly to a
meeting or to Grandma's or to take that once-in-a-lifetime trip to Europe
may now think twice because of fear that the airport pat-downs won't catch
the underwear explosives or that they won't last without a washroom break
during the last hour of a long flight.

No sane person is under the illusion that terrorism is easy to fight. But
since we live in a world dependent upon global air transport, and because
governments control airport security, it is beyond necessary that all of
the dots are connected before the next underwear fire results in real
tragedy.

Napolitano's 'no drama' competence shows her potential

Most Americans got their first prolonged look at Janet Napolitano, the
secretary of homeland security, last weekend. After a passenger on a
Northwest Airlines flight from Amsterdam ignited a concealed fuse as the
plane approached Detroit for a landing, apparently intending to blow it up
and kill all aboard, it fell to Napolitano to take charge of the federal
response.

It came as no surprise to anyone who knows her that Napolitano handled the
incident and its aftermath with aplomb. In the years I have known her, she
has managed every challenge that has come her way with the same calm
command that she showed in this instance. If there is anyone in the
administration who embodies President Obama's preference for quiet
competence with "no drama," it is Janet Napolitano.

I watched as she made the rounds of the morning interview programs on
Sunday, laying out what she knew about the would-be terrorist and
carefully refusing to speculate about the many matters that were still
being investigated. She is being criticized for saying "the system
worked," but her part of the response system did work.

<snip>

Everything appeared to be completely normal, except that her usual sense
of humor was absent, as it should have been, given the circumstances.
