10 Years on: Gardening Problems Shared

Pests and diseases: the early days

At the beginning it was fairly straightforward slugs, snails, vine
weevils, bindweed, acers with browning leaves and camellias that wouldn't
flower and yes, even which way up to plant a bulb. Alan and Charlie ruled
the airwaves, climate change, confusingly named "global warming", had us
briefly red hot for Mediterranean plants and blue garden pots, looking
forward to living it up on the deck of the "outside room", complete with
water feature, sun brolly and patio heater. As the decade unfolded, the
realisation dawned that gardening in the extremes of hot dry/cold wet
would be complicated, that patio heaters were globally warming in a bad
way and that decked gardens became sterile, slimy deathtraps for months in
wet winters.

The greening of gardens

Gardening and your problems became more complicated. That Medusa, "the
environment", raised many ugly heads. There were choices to be made The
"greening" of our gardening lavishly orchestrated by the frequently
po-faced media has been unstoppable. When I started teaching in the
Eighties, among the many misconceptions and myths was an almost universal
belief that peat's main use was as a garden fertiliser. We used stacks. It
was also normal to nobble pests and diseases via spray bottles of
evil-smelling poisonous gunk and most weed killers were non-selective.

The internet

And finally (and rather inevitably), dear readers

Over the decade I detect from your letters and emails a marked increase in
general gardening know-how and a broadening of aspirations. You are still
planting your acers in the wrong place and not watering your camellias
with rainwater in August, but you are taking on the slugs, snails, vine
weevils and bindweed and know which way to plant a bulb. And yet

Your anxiety levels seem to have rocketed in the "a little learning is a
dangerous thing" way. You read about a new pest, an imported disease and
you worry that every brown leaf and wilting shoot indicates terminal
decline and every pretty toadstool is a honey-fungus suspect. Presumably,
as a result of a decade of media efforts and latterly of internet access,
you know, theoretically, about the "right" and "wrong" way to do things,
you can find out which plants will and will not grow in your area, in your
soil, and where to source that tricky half-hardy that is the latest thing,
and yet you seem increasingly consumed by doubt and indecision.
