The golden years have become the competitive years.
The pursuit of fitness beyond simple exercise is sending octogenarians to
the hockey rink and grandparents to the tennis court. Many early Baby
Boomers are saying no to shuffleboard and bingo and yes to marathons and
international competition.
"Getting older doesn't mean the juices stop flowing," said Nancy Kinney,
80, of Phoenix, a world age group record-holder in swimming.
The benefit of exercise to slow the aging process is only part of the
equation. More competitive events are available to the 50-plus crowd.
Additionally, seniors live in an age in which "life is on steroids
compared to what it used to be like," said Bettina Lehnert, a Scottsdale
psychologist.
"We have come to expect almost anything to be possible in this
instantaneous digital age," she said. "People live longer, look younger.
It stands to reason that in this environment seniors would push themselves
to perform to the highest of their ability."

A 2009 National Sporting Goods Association study indicated increases in
participation in basketball, volleyball, soccer, ice hockey, cross-country
skiing and snowboarding by Americans 65-74 during the past five years.
Basketball participation more than doubled.
The study also indicated that of Americans who participated in fitness
activity 50 days or more a year, nearly 30 percent were 55 and older.

Older athletes also must be sensitive to the possibility of hip fractures.
The weakening of their bones because of osteoporosis makes them more
vulnerable. The Canadian Medical Association Journal published a study
last year that said nearly 25 percent of Canadians who break their hip die
within five years of being diagnosed. Higher death rates were associated
with those who did not exercise.
Most agree, though, that benefits outweigh the concerns.
