So when the company that was under contract to keep the communal planters
in the building fell down on the job, Mrs. Milsak, who serves on the board
there, said she could do the job better and for less money. And she did.

.

When another resident in the building asked if she could do planters for a
private space, the budding business took off like wildfire, she says.
"People were missing beautiful flowers."

.

Now, with the help of friend and fellow gardener Shaun Kowaluk, whom she
met while they were working in retail, they manage plantings for six
residents of the building, as well as the communal planters, and have also
collected four other clients from outside the building, all Downtown. A
few of the First Side clients have large terraces in addition to
balconies, others just have small balconies. They do both exterior and
interior plantscaping and also offer watering and maintenance services.

"We started offering indoor plants after the terraces were done and
realized how much the indoor needed green. [We started doing] the dish
gardens because we liked the idea of having something as interesting as
what we were doing outside for the clients to enjoy inside. ... We also
like using beautiful and interesting containers [indoors] that you
typically wouldn't use for plants," says Mrs. Milsak.

Their interior work is also on view in the building hallways. Outside,
they use a wide selection of conifers, shrubs, grasses, succulents and
other hardy plants. They've come up with endless lovely variations on the
theme of a well-planted container. And while this might seem easy, it
isn't when you factor in that gardening 18 stories in the air comes with
its own set of problems.

Mrs. Milsak says that the weight of the containers first had to be cleared
with engineers. Because of their look, low weight and durability,
fiberglass containers are almost always used as the basis for the
plantings.
