I tried the tip, but it didn't work. It asked me to login as an administrator. In fact I am. What I did and it worked is to remove the plugins in the windows exlporer. Find where they are stored (C:/program files/foxit software/foxit reader/plugins/creator/x86) and remove them. It works perfectly.
I don't remember what I did that incurred the problem, the contents are vertically stretched, even after reinstall foxit reader of latest version, the problem persist, I'm using ubuntu 16.04. now my foxit reader shows pdf like
To be as secure as possible, you could run a VM with Linux and an open source PDF reader of your choice. Turn of the network access of that VM. You can share the PDFs through a shared folder with the host OS. You should not open the files on the host OS. This way a malicious PDF can not steal information and send it directly to a server. To infect your system, a chain of exploits would be needed to execute code, break out of the VM and execute Code on the host. It is not impossible but quite hard and depends on many unknown variables such as the uses linux, the reader, the VM technology and the host OS.
This is something you can change from your options menu, in the upper right click the button with three horizontal lines and select options. From there make sure you are under the General category on the left and then scroll down to the applications section. In this section you can chose the default action for opening file types, click on portable document format (.pdf) and if foxit is installed on the computer you should have it listed here. Once you change that foxit should pop up for you again.
Foxit isn't a firefox software and install problem you should direct that to foxit support. Also could be a 32 bit to 64 bit firefox install that could also remove previous unverified addons from running on the new install.
Talos has identified four use-after-free vulnerabilities in Foxit Reader. The reader includes Javascript support to enable dynamic documents and multimedia content, which can be viewed interactively. A specially crafted PDF document can trigger the reuse of previously freed memory, which can lead to arbitrary code execution. An attacker needs to trick a user into opening a malicious file to trigger these vulnerabilities.
Users are encouraged to update these affected products as soon as possible: Foxit Reader 12.0.1.12430. Talos tested and confirmed these versions of the reader could be exploited by these vulnerabilities.
Here, maybe this will help. The file that presents in the reader as an image is 1.4 MB. The file that presents as text is only 59 kB. So it would seem the text selectable PDF file is not an image at all. It contains text with font descriptions and location information.

I have not tested this (I don't have Foxit), but I was curious what Chat GPT-4 would say when asked about possible solutions to best automate reader. I asked it specifically about using a COM API (Foxit does have an API). It barfed up the following tester which may or may not work. Either way, the API reference docs can be found here. I would think the API would be more reliable then sending commands to the GUI.
But after upgrading to the currently latest release, v10.01.1, the results look quite promising. The remaining constraint is, that quite a lot of lines, that are saved as two lines by foxit (separate table rows in the original PDF file) are now saved as one line by gs. But that can be handled by the data processing done later on.
In Foxit PDF reader, open the PDF file by dragging the PDF file into Foxit (or click on the File menu -> Open -> Computer -> Browser, and select the PDF file), or create a blank PDF file by click on the File menu -> Create -> blank.
