The 2011 OA, LSOA and MSOA boundaries are now available for England and Wales, following  modifications made to the original 2001 boundaries using 2011 Census populations.

Changes to the 2001 OAs/SOAs were kept to a minimum, where:

  • their populations have changed significantly since 2001

  • their local authority’s  boundary has changed since the 2001 OAs were created, and been realigned with the changed local authority boundary

  • in a few exceptional cases they were considered unsuitable for reporting statistics

There are now 181,408 OAs, 34,753 LSOAs and 7,201 MSOAs in England And Wales.  This means that 2.6 per cent of 2001 OAs have been changed as a result of the 2011 Census, along with 1.1 per cent of LSOAs and 0.1 per cent of MSOAs.

161 OAs and SOAs were modified because they were considered unsuitable for reporting statistics.

The average population in an OA has increased, from 297 in 2001 to 309 in 2011.

A full analysis of the 2001to 2011 OA and SOA changes will be available shortly.
