If your iTunes library is getting a bit out of control, you can clean things up by deleting music you no longer listen to. When you remove songs from your iTunes library, they'll be removed from any devices they're synced to next time you sync. When you delete songs directly on your iOS device, they are completely removed. Songs that you've purchased may be hidden when you delete them, and can be unhidden with iTunes.
I have had this problem for ages and search everywhere for answer in vain. I cannot believe that it still exist after so many versions of iOS and macOS. Some background: my music files are ripped from CD and I manage music manually from iTunes. Now, I deleted the music files from Music in iPhone. Basically, there is no trace of the music files in the Music app in iPhone. Now, when I connect my iPhone to my Mac and open iTunes. Under "On My Device" , then "Music", the music files are still showing up. However, when I click on them to play within iTunes, they cannot be played and there will be an icon with an exclamation mark next to the entry. This behaviour has been happening since day one when I was using iPhone 3 till now. I cannot believe it it still happening, very frustrating.
Hello, and welcome to Apple Support Communities! I believe that iTunes is telling you that the songs aren't on your iPhone but, the songs are in the cloud. For more information about deleting music, please click or tap this link: Delete songs and music videos from your iCloud Music Library - Apple Support I hope this helps!
First of all, this started happening way back in the stone age when there was no cloud yet. Second, I do not use the cloud service at all, turn everything off, Hence, no reason why the songs are in the clouds. In fact, I am 100% sure they are not. As far as I can explain, I believe the files are gone but the database record/entry are left behind. iPhone Music ignores the entries because the files are not there but iTunes reads and displays the entries. However, when I clicked on it, it does not play because the files are not there and hence display an exclamation icon.
What I cannot believe is there are not more ppl with the same problem. Probably because everyone either get music from Apple Music and never connect their phone to the computer or they do not manually manage the music files on their phone through iTunes - they sync their music files instead. Actually, the problem does not exist if I use iTunes to sync music files (I believe Apple will probably recommend that) . But then what is the point of having the setting/option to manually manage music files. I have live with this problem for a long time but after I upgraded to Mac Sierra and iOS 10, I just felt that it is so ridiculous that this problem still exists. I am almost 100% sure that this a a bug if not a flaw left over in the design.
I'm seeing the same problem, as well as an issue where the phone orientation will occasionally cause only part of the widgit to be visible. Killing the app that was playing music (or video) has no impact on this.
Not only do i see this but when i connect my iPhone to my car via the USB it doesn't display all of the playlists i created and will not let me skip forward through the tracks using the car's controls.
Hard reset seems to be the only thing that works, but then it comes back. I am to the fu**ing boiling point now with this effing bug. Please Apple, fix it. I don't want to have to restart my GD phone 5 times a day because the music widget is on the lock screen.
Yes hard reset seems to be only fix, and that only works until the next time you open podcasts, Pandora, etc., anything that plays audio, then you are back to the same problem. I hope Apple sees this as the annoying bug that it is and not an unwanted "benefit" of the OS.
Having the same issue. It comes on when I turn off my car so I think it might be a bluetooth issue. I rebooted the phone, didn't play any media, and it still appeared on the lock screen. Hope Apple fixes this soon!
Update: I reset my phone and went to a meeting. When I came out, the music player was on my lock screen. No bluetooth, no media was played. It just appeared. My next step is to delete the music app and reinstall it. But I think I'll lose all my playlists. ?
I don't want to "hide" songs in iCloud, I want to delete them. Mostly it's junk that came on CD collections (rough cuts or songs I don't care about). I can get them off my iTunes on my iMac but they still play on my iPhone.
The reason you still see them, is because they are still in the cloud. If the track is ripped from a CD, when you delete a track from the iTunes library you are also prompted, in a dialog, to delete the track from the cloud. Select the option in the dialog and the tracks will be removed from the cloud. If you have deleted tracks and they are still showing up on the iOS device find the cloud-hosted track in the iTunes library and delete it.
If the track is purchased from the iTunes Store you can not permanently delete it, you can only hide it. But hiding will also remove the tracks from being seein on your iOS device. See this Apple KB article:
First issue: Songs I have deleted/hidden do no show up there but still show up on my iPhone as part of iTunes Match so when I am playing music on shuffle, they are included in the mix. I don't know what you mean by "cloud-hosted track." All songs are downloaded onto my iMac. No songs are downloaded onto my iPhone. I play them streaming from iTune Match only. Big library. I see the songs I have hidden on iTunes but it won't let me delete or hide them from the iPhone.
Ok, the best trouble shooting step at this point is for you to disable iTM on the device, then open the Music app and let the content clear out. Once that is finished go to Settings > General > Usage and tap Music (you may need to scroll down in the list). Swipe across "all music" and tap DELETE. Now do a hard reset by holding down Power+Home until you see the Apple logo. Re-enable iTM on the device. Let us know if you still see the songs in the list on the device.
You can hide them on computer iTunes, select iTunes Store in sidebar, click Purchased under QUICK LINKS (on the right) > login your Apple ID > Music tab > hover your mouse over the music and to the far right after Download button, click the X button.
Also, i have deleted these songs from my iTunes library, but they still show up on my iPhone's 3rd party music player. They do not show up on the apple iphone music player as i have 'show all songs' disabled in the settings.
I've searched support articles and found how to delete music in this way, but after I delete it, the artist and album still show in my Music app on my iPhone. To see if the music is still there, I hit "play" and the songs from the deleted artist or album still play. Is there any way to delete individual songs, albums or artists that have been put on the iPhone but still leave them in my iTunes library on my PC?
That makes me think that it is indeed off of my iPhone, but still in my PC iTunes library. However, when I go to play the song to ensure that it's not on the device, it plays as though I never deleted it. That's the confusing part.
Deleting content on the iOS device itself should not have any effect on content on your computer unless you are using one of the Apple Cloud services, like iCloud Drive, Apple Music , iTunes Match or iCloud Photo Library.
Are you sure that you are actually looking at Downloaded Music on the phone. Launch the Music app and tap on Library>Downloaded Music. That will show you the music that is actually on the phone. Songs with the cloud download icon are not actually residing on the phone.
If you're new to iPhone, or have never needed to delete music from your iPhone before, it may not be immediately apparent how to delete songs or albums from your device. Do not fear, though! In this article, we'll guide you through 4 easy ways in which you can remove music from your iPhone.
Before deleting music from your device, or syncing your iTunes library with your iPhone, we highly recommend backing the device up using iTunes or a third-party software. You can create a backup of your iPhone by connecting it to iTunes > click your device icon > click Back up Now.
