In 1910, as President of the Aero Club of America, National Chapter (now the NAA), Robert Collier commissioned the trophy to encourage the American aviation community to strive for excellence and achievement in aeronautic development.

Please use the following guidelines when submitting a Robert J. Collier Trophy nomination. Nominations that do not fall within the specifications listed below may not be considered during selection.

The Robert J. Collier Trophy is awarded annually for the greatest achievement in aeronautics or astronautics in America*, with respect to improving the performance, efficiency, and safety of air or space vehicles, the value of which has been thoroughly demonstrated by actual use during the preceding year.

This form is designed to determine how your achievement fits the Collier Trophy criteria. This form should be submitted as a Word document along with your nomination and letters of support by the January 31st deadline.

Up to five (5) letters supporting a nomination may be sent for consideration by the Selection Committee. Letters should be in PDF Format and submitted along with the Collier Trophy Abstract form and nomination by January 31st.

With assistance from a group of subject matter experts, the NAA President will review all nominations to ensure that the criteria of the Collier Trophy are met. Nominations verified to have met the requirements will advance to the next round of in-person presentations to the Selection Committee. Nominees will be notified whether their nomination will advance to the final round of presentations to the Selection Committee.

The nominees identified as finalists must appear before the Collier Selection Committee in Washington, DC, to present their nomination and answer questions from the committee. Each

nominee will have the opportunity to give a 10-minute presentation of their nomination (visual aids and presentation slides will be allowed), followed by up to 20 minutes of questions from the Selection Committee. No more than four team members representing each nomination will be permitted to participate in the presentation/Q&A session.

Nominees will be notified of the selected winner immediately following the Collier Selection Committee Meeting. The NAA and the recipient will collaborate on the official press release announcing the winner of the Collier Trophy.

Especially at that time in my career, almost all the code I wrote either randirectly in a browser or was intended for a tool that would help me run code ina browser. So for me naturally the terms "unit", "integration", and "end-to-end"would be viewed through the lens of that experience. In fact, I added "static"to the trophy because in the world of JavaScript that's not a given like it isin the predominant languages whenthe testing pyramid wasintroduced.

The reason I explain this background is to help you understand the way theTesting Trophy is intended to be interpreted. I never considered whether itapplied to microservices or even backend services at all. I considered mycodebase in isolation and attempted to categorize the types of tests I couldwrite within the confines of my own code ownership. I always thought ofend-to-end tests as the place where you attempt to validate that things workwithout any (or more practically "as little as possible") mocking in place.

So that left me with categorizing tests on my own code into either "unit" or"integration". I consider a "unit" to be a single function, class, or objectthat contains logic. So here's how I decided to (loosely) categorize them:

By my own definition, Testing Library can be used to test individual Reactcomponents (unit tests), entire pages with HTTP requests mockedvia MSW (integration tests), the full app with veryfew mocks (end-to-end tests), and evenindividual React hooks if necessary(lower level unit tests). And Testing Library is now the most popular and defacto standard... er... testing library for React apps and increasingly the sameis happening wherever the DOM can be found. In May 2020,Testing Library received the "Adopt" distinction on the ThoughtWorks Technology Radar.

I expect some will reply to this blog post with: "Why did you have to make upyour own definitions in the first place? Just use the ones that exist." So I'llrespond before you ask: "Which of the two dozen different definitions would youlike me to have chosen for my own definition?" ? ? In his post abouttest shapes,Martin Fowler approximates a quote of a"test expert" who was asked in the 1990s how they define "unit test":

This is a sad state of affairs, and it's been that way since the 90sunfortunately. It is what it is. I had to choose something that made sense forme and as an educator, I had to choose something that would make the most sensefor the people I'm teaching. Judging by the response from people who haveimplemented my recommendations, my decision was a good one.

Classification is important so we can have conversations about this. It'sunfortunate that you pretty much need to come to a consensus on how you definethese terms before having a productive conversation. But ultimately it reallydoesn't matter. As Justin says, it's a distraction. Especially when so manycodebases are living life on the edge without an automated way to haveconfidence their changes are safe to deploy.

Anyway, hopefully this helps to clear things up a bit. To sum up: When trying toapply the testing trophy to your situation, think of it within the code of anindividual codebase. It definitely has applicability in backends, but I've onlyconsidered it for monoliths not microservices or even serverless functions (andI agree with Tim,most of us should probably be writing monoliths if we can).

Remember, it's all about getting a good return on your investment where"return" is "confidence" and "investment" is "time." If we had unlimited time, then trying to classify things wouldn't be necessary, we'd just write testsforever! But we don't, so I hope this helps you when trying to decide where toput your efforts.
