Sib. 7.5: Sibelius Sounds (Lite)
Posted by G Barry Sugden - 21 Mar 12:12PM Hide picture
I have just been re-installing my laptop, and have re-installed Sibelius 7.13, I have held back on installing the full Sibelius Sound set which I already have on my main PC, because I didn't want to use up the 40GB or so needed for it.
Of course Sibelius will still play back using the primitive GS synth sounds from the laptop.
I wondered whether there is a way to install just the Lite version of the Sibelius sounds rather than having to load the whole lot and then select Lite in the play back menu.
Does anyone know if this is possible.
If not, I seem to remember that Sibelius Sounds Essentials used a lot less memory than the latest sound sets maybe that would be a reasonable comprise for my laptop, will it be compatible with Sib.7

Posted by Robin Walker - 21 Mar 12:27PM Hide picture "Sibelius 7 Sounds (Lite)" is the name of a Sibelius soundset file, which still uses the full Sibelius 7 Sounds sample library. There is no smaller or "lite" version of the sample library that you can install.
You can install the Sibelius 6 Sounds Essentials sample library (no Sibelius 6 registration code is required for this installation) via the Sibelius 6 full installer. Once you have done that, Sibelius 7 will automatically locate the Sibelius 6 Essentials sound library and enable you to select it.

It seems a pity that the Lite version was not made available as an alternative separate download for smaller memory applications (I assume it would be so), as well as being an option within the full download. The reasons for requiring it in two forms are quite separate and different. Maybe there are good technical reasons why that is not possible but I can't think what they would be.
However I remember Sibelius Sound Essentials being quite good, I will use that on my laptop, thank you for reminding me that it's available on my Sibelius 6 disc

Posted by Sam at Sibelius - 21 Mar 03:53PM Hide picture Hi Barry,
We hoped to produce a separate installer for just the Lite sounds but I didn't have the time to put it together. Each patch needs to be split and the whole library would have to be separate but then still work if you installed the full library (quite a tricky nut to crack).
We'll certainly keep this on our list though as more people use Sibelius on tablets where the overall HD space is relatively small.

Sib. 5.1: VDL Sound Essentials Mapping
Posted by bequadro - 06 Feb 01:42PM Hide picture I am curious if there is any mapping diagrams for the Virtual Drumline sounds that are part of the Sibelius Sound Essentials that came with Sibelius 5. I know with VDL2 and 2.5 you get a book with all the keyboard mappings and stuff. Was just curious if there is one for the Essentials. Its a pain to go and look up certain sounds to see if I can play them.
Thanks

Posted by bequadro - 06 Feb 05:55PM Hide picture Ok,
Well I guess I am having some problems with getting the sounds that says its suppose to have. I like having the VDL sounds in sibelius essential sounds. The problem is that I am not getting the variation in sounds from hi hat to hi hat closed to hi hat 1/2 open and etc. I go to House Styles, then edit instruments, choose the instrument (in this case Marching snare 5 lines) and then select edit staff type and there are the notes.
I am not getting the change that I want. Is this the only way to change the sounds and should I be using Kontakt Player 2 (VST) or (AU) in my play back devices. What is the big difference.

Posted by bequadro - 13 Feb 03:01PM Hide picture I am writing for for the marching snare drum, the marching tenor drum, the marching bass drum, and the marching cymbals (thats what they are called in the instruments window). These are the preloaded Virtual Drum Line sounds that came with Sibelius 5 as part of the Essential Sounds.
Of course in the full version of VDL each note head produces a certain sound. When I went to edit instrument and then selected marching snare drum 5 lines, then select edit staff type, I could see the individual notes and the sounds that were mapped to each notehead. When it came time for the hi hat sound they were all the same, the crash sounded the same, the ride, the hi hat open, etc.
I have changed those to other things but they do not produce those sounds in the score after saved.
I have also gone to the Kontak player window to check if you can get the three cymbal sounds and you can.
I am asking is there a way that I can see what note plays what sound when using the marching instruments (like a map) and is there a way to get the hi hat and crash sound on the marching snare staff. Back to top Allthreads Re: Sib. 5.1: VDL Sound Essentials Mapping
Posted by Daniel Spreadbury - 14 Feb 12:04AM Hide picture If you set 'Display' to 'Program names' on the Playback page of File > Preferences, then look in the Edit Staff Type dialog for each of the marching percussion instruments, you'll see how the mapping works.
Take a look at the attached score, which shows you how to achieve the three cymbal sounds in the VDL Snare Drum AutoRL patch included in Sibelius Sounds Essentials. The text above the staff is for informational purposes only.

First, it identifies certain symbols or groups of relevant symbols on a system, and then it monitors other objects on the score that might collide with these symbols or groups. When you move an object on the score, Sibelius will calculate whether the object you're moving will collide with one of the identified symbols or groups. If it does, the program will automatically move the symbol or group to avoid a collision. This is obviously both clever and convenient, and is actually much less complicated than it sounds.
If you don't wish for a symbol to become part of a group, you can simply move it slightly out of range. Alternatively, individual objects can be flagged for collision avoidance, which sounds like a type of insurance, but forces an object to be ignored by Magnetic Layout. If you want to make sure certain classes of symbol are never used by Magnetic Layout, there's a rather sophisticated Magnetic Layout Options window where you can define the behaviour for over 50 object types. This is probably more than the average user will need, but publishers and other advanced users will undoubtedly welcome this level of control.
If you dig around the folders where Sibelius is installed, you'll notice the content files are remarkably similar to those originally supplied with Hypersonic. But this pedigree is actually a good thing. While the technology and sounds are arguably a little dated, the advantage is that General MIDI Module is pretty efficient on modern computers. For example, the sounds require merely 200MB of disk space. Even if you have a particularly modest system, you'll easily get better playback mileage from this instrument when compared to Kontakt Player.
