Im connected by Wifi because the Technicolor router which also happens to be a modem is downstairs in living room and my desktop is upstairs and I don't have ethernet cable that is 10 meters long to connect it directly to my pc. The instructions say I need to connect the linksys to a modem before i start the process.

If the router is on the same network (PC router) than they should have an IP in the same range (192.168.1.XXX for excample) thus if you put the IP of the router into your browser you do not need a gateway

so you've accessed the router using ethernet cable (I'm assuming with 192.168.1.1 IP address) right? Can you enter the advanced settings instead of running the lame setup wizard? I never use those and just set up things manually. If you are able to get into the advanced settings, then there should be a wireless tab in the UI that will allow you to specify a custom SSID for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz radios, select the operating frequency (i.e. wlan channel) and set the security protocol (i.e. WPA, WPA2-PSK/AES, etc).

The manual is assuming that the router is the only networking device you are connecting to, so usually its default IP address would be 192.168.1.1, but if your gateway/modem is dishing out IP addresses which it should be, then it has likely changed the router's IP.

Regardless of the IP of the router, are you able to access the advanced settings on the router's home/splash page when you access it via the browser? I'd suggest going that route instead of using the automated setup wizards.

I myself have been screwed in the ass by those shitty auto setup utilities, I never recommend them to anyone.

There will usually always be a way to manually set it up; and if it doesn't then the thing isn't worth my time and I return it.

Both of the computers are connected to the router an the network has been established on computer 1, I am not able to get into computer 2 I would like to access the programs an files on computer 2 from computer 1

Thanks every one I did access the router, but still can not access computer 2. the tec at linksys says I need to remote access computer 2 can some one tell me how to go about this.or can some one give me a better way to get in to computer 2.

Thanks junkman94

If on Windows platform, run IPCONFIG from a command window and see what

your gateway ip is. Type that address into the address bar of your browser.

You will still have to have user name and password to access or change

anything.

We recommend you set up your router using the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router Setup. Doing this not only connects your router to the Internet, but it also sets up wireless security and gives you the wireless settings you need to connect more computers and devices.

When setting up an EA-Series router, you can also create your Linksys Smart Wi-Fi account. This account makes it easy to access your router settings and features from any Web browser. You can see and change wireless and network settings, parental controls, guest access, and more. It allows you to take advantage of everything your router offers.

We have created a handsome and easy-to-use phone app to guide you through setup. The Linksys app ensures that you get online quickly and securely. After you create a Linksys Smart Wi-Fi account, the setup screens help you connect to the internet, and build customized settings to manage Wi-Fi access and performance.

A Linksys Smart Wi-Fi account is available if you have an EA-Series router. It allows you to securely access your router settings from any web browser, even when you're away from home. When you create your account, your router is associated with your unique account to prevent unauthorized access. The account is free and takes only a few minutes to set up.

If you didn't create a Linksys Smart Wi-Fi account during Setup, you can go to www.linksyssmartwifi.com to create one. When creating an account, you must be on a computer or device connected to your router so the account can be associated with your router. You can then go to www.linksyssmartwifi.com from any web browser, sign in, and access your router settings, apps, and everything Linksys Smart Wi-Fi has to offer.

If you created a Linksys Smart Wi-Fi account (available on EA-Series routers) you can access network settings for multiple routers. For example, if you installed a router in your home and another router in your parents' home, and you created a Linksys Smart Wi-Fi account, you can access settings for both routers. You can open Linksys Smart Wi-Fi and access your parent's router and make changes at any time, from anywhere.

The name of the router currently being accessed is shown at the top of the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi page. Click the dropdown menu next to the router name to select a different router name. The settings for that network will display.

Note: To change the router name to something more meaningful to you, select Device List and then click the router. In the router details window, click Edit to change the router name to whatever you like. This name will then appear along the top of the Home Page when this router is selected.

If you lose your Internet connection and try to access Linksys Smart Wi-Fi, you'll be asked to enter your router password instead of your Linksys Smart Wi-Fi account information. You set your router password during router setup and may have written it in the Quick Start Guide.

If you forget your router password, you'll have to reset your router and set up the router again. Resetting the router means clearing the name, password, and all other router settings and returning it to the factory default. If you're trying to access Linksys Smart Wi-Fi without Internet access and you suspect the issue is with your Internet Service Provider, don't reset your router. Wait until your service is restored and then go into Router Settings to reset the router password and write it down.

To reset the router, use a small pen or an unfolded paper clip to push and hold the Reset button on the back or bottom of the router. Keep the button pushed until the power light blinks (approximately 10-15 seconds), and then release it. This returns the router name and password to its original settings. Then, run the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router Setup:

I'm trying to setup a custom router with the DM200. I've put the modem into "modem only" mode and connected it to the router. I've setup PPPoE with my username/password but the router is not getting any internet connection.

I've managed to access it as modem-only and it says it's got an internet connection. I can't change anything since it's all greyed out. I assume this means I need to connect it to the router and setup from the routers page?

Ok just for some clarity I reset my router so it went into the setup wizard and it isn't actually detecting a DSL connection. This leads me to believe that the modem isn't actually doing its job. Any insight?

I'm afraid I'm running out of ideas too. Have a read through this -Modems-Routers/Problems-using-DM200-in-modem-only-mode/td-p/113... it would appear you're not alone in using the DM200 in modem mode on ADSL. Seems it works on FTTC but doesn't provide a proper 'bridge' in ADSL mode. Athough there's one refrence in there about it working on an earlier firmware...

1) This device does not have sufficient resources (flash and/or RAM) to provide secure and reliable operation.

This means that even setting a password or changing simple network settings might not be possible any more, rendering the device effectively useless. See OpenWrt on 4/32 devices what you can do now.

The original WRT54G was first released as a SOHO router in December 2002. The product line supports WiFi and five switched Ethernet ports. (The WAN port is part of the same internal network switch, but on a different VLAN.) The devices have two removable antennas connected through Reverse Polarity TNC connectors. For additional background information, see Linksys WRT54G series.

The different models within the WRT54G series may all look identical. Please refer to the model information sticker on the underside of the unit in order to determine the precise model number and hardware version of your device.

* 14.07 had slow LuCI web interface, after enabling Wifi, the entire router became inaccessible. A custom cut-down image worked slightly better, but would not let WAN and Wifi work at the same time due to low system RAM. Ref: Forum Thread

* Unplug the power cord, press and hold the reset button, put in the power cord, when DMZ-LED lits up release the reset button. When done right, both Power-LED and DMZ-LED will start blinking. Now you can ping and telnet into 192.168.1.1

The WRT54G/S/L has a 10 pin connection slot on the board called JP1 (JP2 on some v1.1 boards). This slot provides two TTL serial ports at 3.3V. Neither of the ports use hardware flow control, you need to use software flow control instead. Other routers may have similar connections. These two TTL serial ports on the WRT54GL router can be used as standard Serial Ports similar to the serial ports you may have on your PC. In order to do this though you need a line driver chip that can raise the signal levels to RS-232 levels. You can not directly connect a serial port header to the board and expect it to work. That method will only work with devices that can connect to TTL serial ports at 3.3V. Connecting two which have 3.3V directly will work (TX - RX, RX - TX, GND - GND). Standard RS-232 devices cannot be directly connected which accounts for nearly all serial PC devices.

Once the modification is made you can have at most two serial ports to use for connecting devices etc. By default, OpenWrt uses the first serial port to access the built-in serial console on the router. You can connect to it at 115200,8,N,1 using a terminal program like Putty, SecureCRT or minicom for example. This is helpful because if you have problems communicating with your router this method will allow you easy access connecting over a serial console. By default this leaves you with one serial port left, however, there is a method to turn the console off giving you access to both ports if you really need them. It isn't recommended but it can be done.
