We'll walk through a variety of shady habitats in the valleys of Shephard Creek and Cobbledick Creek, and visit three major rock units from the dinosaur age: the ridge-forming Oakland Congomerate, featuring stones shattered by Hayward fault earthquakes, the valley-forming Shephard Creek Formation, and the ridge-forming Redwood Canyon Formation which supports our natural redwood forest. All are approximately 70-80 million years old.

Oakland has an unusual variety of rocks, but these three rock units were given their names because of their typical presence in Oakland. Each one affects the topography and soils of the landscapes and homes that sit upon it.

Our walk will be from Montclair Playground to the Beaconsfield Canyon open space in Oakland. Bring a hat, sunscreen, drinking water, and snacks. No rock hammers will be permitted. Be prepared for a vigorous walk, just under 4 miles with a 400-foot elevation gain in the middle with some off-trail scrambling at the 0.5 mile mark. Dogs are allowed, but must be on a leash.

Our walk leader will be Andrew Alden; a writer, photographer, editor and blogger with a lifelong passion for rocks, minerals, fossils and the planets they come from. Andrew spent six years with the U.S. Geological Survey, which included research excursions on land and sea. He has been a writer on geological subjects since 1981, host of the earthquakes conference on The WELL since 1992, and was About.com’s Geology Expert for 17 years starting in 1997. He began leading geological tours in 2005.
