At NBPV Albert and I talked about the possibility of visiting one of
teh wineries in the Paso Robles area before heading up to the
campsite. We can perhaps work lunch in there too. Would there be any
interest in doing this?

We might be interested. Christina and I are thinking of coming up on
Thursday evening again, as it was nice to have a relaxing day in camp
on Friday. There's also a wine tasting event in Santa Maria on that
Sunday that I might go to. (ABC/Qupe Open House. $15 for 40+ wines
and lunch)

Qupe is a great winery, I would be interested in joining that.

I asked a friend who has been down several times what he would
recommend:

"In addition to Tobin James, our favorites are Zenaida, especially
their syrah and a blend called Zephyr. Sometimes, their zin is OK
too. And Zin Alley. Zinfandel only, but usually very strong spice
character. You will need to call for an appointment.

Stacked Stone we have only been to once, but will visit again. Wines
to drink young. Also very interesting people.

Linne Calodo and Aventure are expensive (tasting fee) but worth a
tasting fee if you just want to try some really good wine. We don;t
buy much, too expensive.
You might also visit Midnight Cellars. We were not impressed when we
visited, but I had some of their wine - forgotten what - at a tasting
and thought it pretty good."

Any of those sound good?

cheers,

Nancy

I must admit my knowledge in this area is lacking. I'll leave the selection to those more qualified.

Well if we were going to do an actual tasting, those all sound like excellent options. But twice a year Au Bon Climat hosts a massive tasting of theirs and eight other wineries' stock at the ABC warehouse. That's the event Ted mentioned

Here's details on the event from last year (format doesn't change):

Once the flyer is up for the event we'll send it out, too, but the short form is:

50 wines (at least)
Lunch
$15

If you're interested in hitting specific wineries (rather than a mass tasting event like this), then by all means, the suggestions made previously are excellent. I have my own preferences for specific wineries / wines in the area, too.

The one downside to this is that it's on Sunday in Santa Maria. I know
some of the people involved are coming down from SF, and Friday
Afternoon in the Paso Robles area might work better for them.

Of course, they're welcome to come to ABC, but it's sort of a different
thing than a quick trip up to Paso on Friday.

Yes, this was my only hesitation. It sounds like a great event, but
it adds an extra two hours of driving to those of us coming down from
SF.

Yeah, I think the Santa Maria event is basically out for us, at least.
So here's a solid proposal from the southbound:

Midnight Cellars
Zenaida
Linne Calodo

Are all very close to highway 46, right on the way to the coast from
anyone coming up or down 5. Plan to meet at the first of them at
1:30pm (with the option of some sort of nice lunch in Paso
beforehand?) and taste our way through the three before hitting the
coast.

So, meet at noon for lunch? Can anyone suggest a good restaurant in the area?

A quick look at Yelp seems to indicate that the major themes for Paso Robles cuisine are Local, Organic, and Boring.

Most likely options I spotted:

All of those places seem fine. Bistro Laurent look slightly more interesting to me.
