A friend in need is a friend indeed
He wears power glasses, keeps wandering from places to places, excavates age old stone slabs, scrubs it, peruses for hours and deciphers. He reads letter by letter, makes
notes and brings something new to the ungrateful Nepalese society. His research ability is of no match. He is a simple but determined Newah from Patan. He dislikes self promoting, hates knocking on the doors of authorities for the dole. He keeps writing in his mother tongue . Every drop of his ink is the cost of his blood. His name is Chatra Bahadur Kayastha, a research expert and one of the senior most NepalBhasa Activist.
I received a phone call from Mr. Surendra Amatya, another Nepal Bhasa Activist from Patan, who informed me that the scholar Chatra Bahadur is in financial crisis due to his wife's illness. In the mean time, my colleague Rajendra Shakya who, coincidently is also from Patan and a promising Nepal Bhasa Activist e-mailed a circular message stating Chatra Bahadur's
hardship.
Chatra Bahadur's wife Motilaxmi 68 is in coma in one of the most expensive hospital, B and B. According to Chatra Bahadur, she was taken to the hospital by neighbours whilst he was away. B and B is notorious for charging the patients. Chatra Bahadur tried to transfer his wife to a cheaper hospital but he could not dare to because of the doctor's warning. Transferring a patient in such condition is too risky. He has no choice but to carry on in same expensive hospital and now his hospital invoice alone has already reached to the NRs 6,43,000.00 in words six lakh and forty three thousand. There is an another separate bill of medicines. Now-a-days he is sitting next to his unconscious wife's bed and collecting Newah words for flowers from moth-eaten
manuscripts.
As you know MATINA is a magazine of Newah people, we seriously felt that this is the time to support our honourable scholar. Hence, we have decided to help him. Hope, you will also join us in this humanitarian action.
