MBTA's new power

Why did MBTA feel the need to re-invent the wheel with the new power they're getting next year?  The two MP36s they got from Utah seem to be working out pretty well, and AFAIK that model is still in production.

I noticed that too, Most cities bought LRV's already in use elsewhere but we have Boeing's, Type 7 and 8 and you know of that success. As to locomotives I would like the reason also.
