Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said Monday the tracks damaged last week when two trains collided should be fixed by Wednesday.

The first workday after last week's accident proved a frustrating commute for many trying to get into New York City from Connecticut's suburbs, officials said.

Last week's crash in Fairfield between two Metro-North trains that injured 70 people has shut down a shared rail line also used by Amtrak while the rail cars are removed and damaged tracks are repaired.

Malloy said Monday the line should be fully operational by Wednesday, WVIT-TV, New Britain, reported. Earlier Malloy urged Nutmeg State commuters to stay home if at all possible to help reduce the crush of additional drivers on highways.

"If there's any way to stay home, please stay home," he said at a news conference Sunday evening.

Metro-North set up a shuttle bus system to offer riders who were forced off the train a lift to the next station, The New York Times reported. A spokesman said the transportation authority acknowledged the solution was hardly ideal but was working as best as could be expected.

"The shuttle bus that we have put into place seems to be operating as intended, more or less without any major hiccups," said Aaron Donovan, a spokesman for the authority. "Obviously it's a challenging, difficult situation by nature, but it seems to be as good as one would hope given the circumstances."

Roughly 125,000 people each day ride the New Haven line where the crash happened.

MTA officials said they expect similar delays to persist despite around-the-clock repair work.
