Dear William,

I’m so incredibly proud of passenger rail advocates and the grassroots advocacy efforts undertaken in the fight to revive traditional dining service on Amtrak’s long-distance trains. Today, Amtrak validated our voices and unrelenting work by announcing the restoration of traditional dining service, starting with the western routes in Summer 2021.

Amtrak’s reversal is a prime example of how a sustained advocacy effort works. Since September 30, 2019, when traditional dining service was first terminated on trains east of Chicago and New Orleans, passenger rail advocates galvanized. The Rail Passengers Association’s office was inundated with requests for how to advocate against the loss of this onboard service. Congressional representatives and Amtrak leadership received thousands of telephone calls and emails as you made your case for not only the return of traditional dining but also the equitable refinement of service offerings. Today’s announcement shows that persistence pays off! Give yourselves a pat on the back as passenger rail advocates.
Your Rail Passengers Association staff spent countless hours discussing dining with Amtrak and I’ve addressed traditional dining four times in recent congressional testimony. We’ve educated Congressional offices on the dining service needs of passengers and about the realities of food preparation capabilities across the Network.

These continued activities wouldn’t have been possible without your contributions. The efforts of your Association staff were made possible by your monetary support. Our work doesn’t cease with today’s great news, in many ways it’s just the beginning. Staff will monitor the return to traditional dining service to ensure Amtrak is following through the promises laid out in their announcement. I invite you to donate today to help staff keep working to make food better and more accessible on trains.
Best,
Jim Mathews
