Hi all,

So... I am looking at buying an older Elite that has the punch down down panel on the back instead of the elco connections.. I was wondering if anyone has a wiring diagram for that? I have seen the back of the console and it seem there are multiple groups of 56 punch blocks. But I am a bit confused on the details. Are some for access to the patchbay as well? Any help would be great!

Hi Eric,
Yes, as I mentioned in our phone conversation the other day, the
connections on the back panel will pretty much all have a corresponding
point on the patch bay, including i/o for external rack gear. The signal
flow is generally: punch block (or ELCO/EDAC connector)--->Patch bay
---> Channel strip, for a source (like Mic or Line i/p) and vice-versa
for an output. Typically these will appear on two rows of jacks that are
"normalled", ie: the signal normally flows from the source jack (say,
Insert Send) to the destination jack (Insert Return) unless you plug
jacks in to break that connection.
So, the rows that are dedicated to the console functions like Mic, Line,
Bus Out, Tape In etc are the equivalent of the back panel connections on
your Ramsa console. The two rows dedicated to the Auxilliary Gear are
the equivalent of the back panels of all of your outboard gear,
conveniently moved to one place on the patch bay, by way of the punch
blocks on the rear of the console.
Best,
Ike

Ike,

Thanks again!    I think I get the part your mentioning but I was referring to the actual punch block itself. It seems the console has multiple groups of the punch points with only numbers.I was wondering if there is a document detailing what is what.
It also seems the current install may have directly soldered snakes to the TT bay skipping the punch section for external gear. I am working to get them to include that as it wouldn't be fun re-soldering the bay!!
Thanks again.

Eric,

Do you have the manual that came with the console when new?  The punch block layouts should be detailed there.  Many Neoteks were customized in small (or larger) ways and the manual that accompanied each console would normally describe the exact configuration for that individual console.  Patchbays and I/O wiring were among the most common customizations.

So I actually haven't purchased the desk yet.. Just trying to figure out what I want them to include when they decommission the desk.. And if the price s worth it. It really is a concern as punching down 32 in and out from my converters doesn't seem very fun! I would use this desk if I buy it will be used for mixing mostly. So mic inputs would stay low but line ins would be used..

Those mic inputs also come in handy for some of the routing options on the console so I wouldn't dismiss them.

Hi Eric,

I have an older Elite with the ADC "punch blocks" on the rear panel.  Don't be afraid of the punching.  The punch down connections are fast and easy to terminate with the proper wire (not too thin, with a drain wire has worked well for me).  I use tight fitting teflon sleeve over the drain wire for shields.  Punch downs are good connections. Cut and "fan" the wires to the appropriate length and use the wire retainer clip channels located above the top rows and below the bottom rows.  They'll provide adequate strain relief.  Make sure the seller gives you the punch down tool with the console. The seller really should be able to give you full documentation for all connections.  I would check them with a meter to verify before terminating. Hopefully they didn't bastardize the original wire wrap/punch panel to bay wiring. They need to tell you exactly how the console is wired or modified in order for you to assess what you need.  Better to know exactly what you're getting into.  Good luck.

Thanks guys,

Not to scared of the punch downs I come from a network engineer background so I ma very familiar with the punch block itself just worried about identifying the actual punch to patch relationship! I do have a toner if all else fails! And yes the desk has a punch tool included so we are good there! It also doesn't seem they changed the wiring so that's good.. I really hope they have the docs.. The claim to but we will see. I got a great deal on it so I am willing to put some effort in to restoring it. Oh and yes I bought it!!!!

Hey Eric,

Great!  Let me know if you end up needing any documentation.  I've got a bunch.

So I ended up buying the board!
And very luckily they had very good docs for the punch panel!! It does need some TLC but nothing that scares me really. I am interested in the Bus insert upgrade Ike has, pretty sure it would be a good idea to do ant maintanece or mods prior to installing the beast!!
