Adobe Digital Editions (abbreviated ADE) is an e-book reader software program from Adobe Systems, built initially (1.x version) using Adobe Flash. It is used for acquiring, managing, and reading e-books, digital newspapers, and other digital publications. The software supports EPUB and PDF (nonproprietary file format for reflowable text, or fixed layout e-books; respectively). It implements a proprietary scheme of digital rights management (DRM) which, since the version 1.5 release in May 2008, allows document sharing among multiple devices and user authentication via an Adobe ID. Digital Editions is a successor to the Acrobat eBook Reader application.[1]

Windows and Mac OS X versions of Adobe Digital Editions were released on 19 June 2007. The current Apple iOS version of the app has a one star and two star rating. Previous versions of the software required version 9.0 of Adobe Flash Player. Starting with version 2.0, however, which relies on .NET Framework 3.5 on Windows, Flash Player is no longer supported. Adobe initiated development of a Linux version of ADE in 2007; however, this has not had any beta release or any formal updates.[2]

Adobe Digital Editions uses the proprietary ADEPT (Adobe Digital Experience Protection Technology) digital rights management scheme,[3] which is also implemented on some e-book readers, including iPads and many Android devices, but not Kindles.[4] The software locks content to up to six machines and allows the user to view the content on each of them. Barnes & Noble (B&N) e-books are protected with a variant of ADEPT.[citation needed]

When viewing an e-book, Adobe Digital Editions by default stores the e-book locally as PDF files on Windows machines. These files can be copied and handled like other files, but they cannot be opened except with Adobe Digital Editions. Adobe's website has virtually no information on ADEPT except on its trademark page and a statement that OverDrive is compatible.[6]

To see the books you added, go to the 'My Books' menu on your eReader. Tap Filter at the top of the screen, then select Imported. You'll see all the items you've added with Adobe Digital Editions.

I've been through a process of installing, uninstalling and reinstalling various versions of Adobe Digital Editions (ADE). There is useful information on which versions of ADE will work on which versions of Wine at the WineHQ website. I found the options below worked for installing ADE on an Ubuntu 14.04LTS system (32-bit).

For what it's worth, I'm answering how to install Adobe Digital Editions 2.0.1 (which I needed because of the old-fashioned encryption they used before version 3) for Debian testing ("bookworm" as I am writing this answer). Here are the installation steps I have used, which should be quite the same for any recent Ubuntu distribution:

Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) is a free program that is used for managing ebooks with digital rights management (DRM). It is like iTunes for eBooks. You will need it if you want to download most ebooks from the library including ebooks from EBSCOhost, ebrary, and EBL. You do not need ADE to access and read ebooks online or to download Springer eBooks.

(You only download the eBook from our site once; after that subsequent eBook copies are delivered to a additional devices via AirSync, below.)
Digital SMARTbook Features AirSync to Additional Devices (up to six devices and six computers)Adobe Digital Editions 4.5 allows seamless fulfillment of books across devices. When a user fulfills a book on one device, the book will be automatically downloaded via AirSync to all the other devices that belong to that user (activated using the same user ID). Just install Adobe Digital Editions software on your new/additional devices (PC & Mac, iPad & iPhone, Android tablets and smartphones, Nook, & more) and sign-in with the same Adobe ID. See the full list of 85+ devices and applications.

** Another option would be to use Bluefire Reader app instead of Adobe Digital Editions! It is available for a small cost in the Apple App Store, but it correctly displays the pages proportionally and also offers a better background color (pages are white instead of dim). Here is an actual sample page that had the same display issues in the Bluefire Reader app:

If you are not seeing the book in Adobe Digital Editions on your new/subsequent device yet, you may have to give sufficient time for the book to sync from the Adobe servers to your device over your internet connection! Part of the problem is unfortunately there is no status bar or hourglass icon that shows you the status of the AirSync process, it just happens in the background.

In addition to paperback, SMARTbooks are also available in digital (eBook) format. Our digital SMARTbooks are for use with Adobe Digital Editions and can be transferred to up to six computers and six devices with free software available for 85+ devices and platforms.

Those who know me know that I am a huge Halo fan. Recently, I finished reading Halo: Broken Circle and decided to move on to the latest release, Halo: New Blood. I already knew that Halo: New Blood isn't currently available as a paperback as, for some reason, it was decided that it would be a "digital-first short novel", so I went looking for the eBook. This is the story of my painful quest.

So, I selected "DOWNLOAD" and anticipated a file called something like "Halo - New Blood.epub" to start downloading. Instead, I saw "URLLink.acsm". Now, I consider myself to be pretty au fait when it comes to file extensions and formats and I had never heard of an ACSM file. Google quickly revealed that it is the American College of Sports Medicine but, after tweaking my search, revealed that it is actually an Adobe Digital Editions file used for downloading eBooks.

I hate having to install unneccessary software on my computer but, considering I'd already paid for it, I relented and downloaded and installed Adobe Digital Editions version 4.0.3 for Windows from _4.0_Installer.exe via -editions/download.html I ran the "URLLink.acsm" file and Adobe Digital Editions opened with a lovely "Computer Authorization" window explaining the following:

Fair play to Adobe, they have put a great spin on Adobe Digital Editions and their (proprietary, nonetheless) ADEPT (Adobe Digital Experience Protection Technology) Digital Rights Management to actually make it sound like it's benefiting you! But... I'm old-fashioned and I prefer to have the raw file so that I can use it on whatever I want and I will always have it regardless of whether Adobe decide to up and abandon ADE. However, in this situation, I had to comply. So, I opened the "eBook vendor" dropdown menu and saw this: Because I'm incredibly pedantic and so that you can understand what it's like to, after everything thus far, search through a list of 78, non-alphabetised company names, I have painstakingly, manually typed out the entire list:

TO THE INTERNET! I Googled "waterstones adobe digital editions" and followed the "eBooks & MP3 Audio Downloads Waterstones.com Help" result to -&-mp3-audio-downloads/12. The "READING EBOOKS ON AN EREADER, PC OR MAC" section, unhelpfully, advised the following:

DRM is the technology used to protect copyrighted material. It controls how a resource is accessed and used, including the borrowing time, the number of users, and the number of devices used for accessing the content. Further limitations include the copy/print allowances for each individual resource and the prevention of modifications being made to the content.
