All Chaos products need to be connected to a Chaos License to function on your machine. Chaos License Server version 6.0 provides licensing without the need for any physical devices. It allows you to easily activate more licenses right after the purchase and provides a way to stay offline while using your Chaos products, when you need to. It is still compatible with existing USB dongles, in case you need to use your licenses in this way.

The Unified Login Application is integrated into the License Server installation. The ULA allows Single Sign On for all ULA-integrated Chaos desktop apps. Signing in to any of the Chaos applications will automatically log the user in all other Chaos applications installed on the machine.

There are two installation options - Remote and Local. You choose the license type during your Chaos product installation process. For the Local installation type, an installation and activation is required.

If you are updating your licensing system from the previous setup to the new online system, no changes are required on the workstation or application side of your software. The online system replaces the existing dongle functionality without any additional steps needed on your part. There is no need to use the Change License Settings application to reconfigure your setup. If you have purchased online licenses, these can be activated for online usage in the new system right away.

For instructions on how to deploy a Silent Chaos license installation, how to deploy a license on multiple machines, how to change the license settings, how to control the license server through the command line, and other advanced options, see the Advanced Usage page.

The Licensing system allows you to use seats associated with your Chaos account easily from anywhere you can log in over the internet. If you also have a USB dongle with Chaos product licenses attached to your computer, you can utilize those available licenses with the License Server. For more details on this process, please see the Dongle usage page.

The Chaos License Server is a secure way to license products online. It is a highly-encrypted centralized online system that manages licenses for all your systems. Additionally, the Chaos License Server allows users to "borrow" licenses from their online accounts and work offline without having an internet connection or a hardware dongle for up to 14 days at a time. For more details on how the Licensing System works, please see the License Setup page.

For instructions on creating a fail-safe for unexpected server downtime, setting up a silent installation with a predefined set of instructions, controlling the License Server through the command line, and many more, see the Advanced usage page.

Please read carefully the License Server Agreement. Click on I accept the Agreement when done. Then you can click on Install to start the installation. If you want to modify the installation, click on the Advanced button.

If any applications associated with the License Server are open, the installation wizard will close them before attempting installation. Please wait patiently for this process to complete; it might take a few minutes.

The wizard will automatically prompt you to activate. Enter your Chaos credentials. In case you have forgotten your password, click on the Forgot your password? link and it redirects you to a webpage where you can create a new password. The Other Sign in options link redirects you to the Chaos login page, where you can log in using a Google account, a Trimble account, or a corporate email.

If you don't want to activate the license right now, you can click Skip and activate it through your browser later. Keep in mind that you cannot access Chaos products without an active license.

If you are installing for the first time and you deselected the Activate during installation option, a browser window of the Chaos License Server interface opens. Click the Sign in from the Online licensing menu. You are then prompted to enter your username/email and password. Once the activation is successful, you will be able to see the list of your available licenses on the Chaos License Server home page.

You can always access the License Server activation page by typing 127.0.0.1:30304 in your web browser or through the Manage Chaos License Server application installed with the rest of your service functions (e.g. Windows Start Menu).

Some users are seeing an issue with a failure to activate their V-Ray license in Studio. This is a known issue for users who have previously installed V-Ray on their computer with a different email. You'll need to sign out and uninstall Chaos license...

"Thanks for reaching out to SketchUp Support!
SketchUp Support has tried uninstalling and reinstalling V-Ray and the Chaos license server, and revoking and reassigning the entitlement 2 times with 5 minutes in between to avoid notification racing. Please note, we are unable to provide further support at this time and if you are unable to resolve the problem please issue a temporary V-Ray license. "

I had a problem with the new license server in a previous build. If you can uninstall the new 4.5.1 license server and reinstall the earlier version 4.4.1, it should work. I'm avoiding updating the license server until I hear its working correctly from AutoDesSys.

I'm having the same problem with the license server application. Have tried uninstalling/reinstalling, have tried the 4.5.1 and the 4.4.1 versions and nothing works. It does not connect to the license server. I'm on Mac OS X Sierra (10.12.6) and it also appears that the vrol.bin process is calling out constantly to connect with no result and each time it does it throws up a dialog box to allow/disallow via the firewall every 10 seconds or so. Highly irritating. I uninstalled the Vray license server entirely. Not sure what is up with this build, but everything was fine up until now. Was loving Vray up until now. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

There was an issue with an earlier version of the beta installer that could leave some permissions set wrong on OS X. There is a folder in your home directory called /.ChaosGroup. Its a hidden folder (hence the dot at the beginning). This folder may now have the wrong permissions assigned to it.

UPDATE on license server issue.

Did FormZ permissions issue suggestion, still no joy . The install that comes with the latest download is still problematic (see ASONE post above).

Tried borrowing the offline license. Mistake as I thought that might work, but you still need to get to the V-Ray localhost to do implement.

Searched through ChaosGroup forum. Found a potential correction and did the following:

deleted files in: /Users/"username"/.ChaosGroup
reinstalled the V-Ray OLS version 4.4.1.ADV via ChaosGroup website. And re-activated the license. This appeared to work to connect to the V-Ray OLS, but now there are two "workstations" listed in my.chaosgroup.com license portal: the old activation with the the borrowed license, and a workstation that is the newly activated license. (I think this is actually the same license) But since the old workstation (which I can no longer access via the OLS since it's been reinstalled on the same computer) has an offline borrowed license, it appears I cannot use the license on the new workstation. *facepalm*. I suppose I would suggest not using an offline license unless all is going 100% smooth.

I have an email to ChaosGroup support, but they have been spoken about as unreceptive with respect to support. Crossing fingers that won't be the case.

Note this dialogue still shows in FormZ even though I can connect to the V-Ray OLS now:

Got a response from ChaosGroup. They are setting up a web meeting with me. The timezone differential EET vs PST is a bit tricky, but will attempt on Monday. I think I understand what the problem might be now, but have no control to change the borrowed license problem. Based on ChaosGroup forum, it appears that ChaosGroup support is the only one that can release the borrowed license.

My other question is, why did this happen in the first place? Seems like the possible source is the install that comes with the last email update for the V-Ray beta as I believe everything was working before that.

please can we get a simple solution from chaosgroup / autodessys in form of a fixed installer? i still need to evaluate if to buy a license. with the last beta the whole plugin / fz combo seems to run in a rather unstable way and the licensing issues on top are not really helping to find out if this a viable production environment. another problem is also that the plugin needs last 8.6 fz beta - which is rather buggy and has an broken UI.

The problem existed in an earlier installer of V-Ray for formZ The installer had set some permissions wrong and that can cause problems for future installations as well. The problem has been fixed in the current installer, but you may need to apply the above fix to instal the latest version properly. Please recognize that this is a beta version and beta versions serve the purpose of working out these kind of issues. If you are not comfortable in working through these issues, then its probably best to wait for the release.

With regards too the "broken UI" comment. There is an issue in the current v8.6 WIP that causes UI elements to be sized improperly on some systems. We have fixed this issue and a new 8.6 WIP will be coming soon.
